While it may not have been as action-packed as the rest of the series, this was still a very solid installment. Finally getting some backstory is nice, even if it's 4 volumes into this series.

This wouldve been tough to read month-to-month in single issue form - it’s basically one long issue (that sounds stupid, i realize, but that was the feeling reading this one). But i like the opening up of the world and am very excited to see where it goes. At this pace, however, this series could go as long as Batman tho.

Part one of (if the author’s plans via Twitter is anything to go by) a planned three flashback arcs, something is killing the children volume 4 shows us the events of how Erica first joins the House of Slaughter.
This is a nice volume for a number of reasons. For one it introduces us more to the inner workings and rules on the house (later extrapolated on further in book of slaughter). For another, it lets us see a lot more of the human side of the house, we see the inner turmoil of Erica’s master, meet the man in charge of the farm, and even see Cecelia trying to be kind in her own incredibly mean way. Erica was already a great character as an adult, but she’s such a little shit as a kid in the most fun way. And then for those that have yet to read House of Slaughter as of now, we even get to see the good side of Aaron which had only the briefest of glimpses at this point in the story. Of course that’s mostly been character work, the art, it goes without saying is still great, as are the colors.
Reading this in volume format though, I do have one complaint. One of the cool things about SIKTC is it’s unique paneling that travels across both pages, but unlike with usual spreads there are still a lot of panels broken up between them. Anyways, the issue I had is that, most noticeably on one page in particular, the way the book was bound would often blend two panels together to look like one. This created a fun moment where I was very confused by the master of the farm seemingly having an identical twin brother wearing the same clothes. But nope, panel border was just hidden in the seam. It’s not a major issue, but one that stood out a little and makes me wonder if SIKTC might be better read digitally or in the issue by issue format.

Regardless, the fourth volume is still great, this series has yet to drop the ball and I hope it can keep up its fantastic streak

LOVED this volume. Throughout the first three, I was hoping for more background on Erica. An entire volume dedicated to her history and why/how she joined the order of St. George was amazing. Erica is such a strong, super human character with so much grit.

Learning more about Erica's history was great. Loads of details revealed in this volume. I really like Erica as a character. She shows so much super human resilience, something I certainly don't have, but it's good to see those who are in such a terrible situation rise above it because that often (usually?) doesn't happen in real life.
