I am completely hooked and utterly gripped by this comic!
The art is gorgeous and moody and so full of character. The writing is riveting and the story is compelling.
This was the origin arc and it did a great job of being it's own thing in that classic genre.
A small thing, but, as someone who cries constantly, I strangely love how much people cry in these comics.
So. Fucking. Good!

Got to learn about Erica's past in this volume. She went through hell and came out the other side stronger for it. I loved her mentor who's the leader of the Black Masks. And I love how even though everyone in the House of Slaughter has their own rough job to do, some of them keep their empathy. And that's really cool to see. Looking forward to reading the next volume.

“Child. When you are walking the halls of the house of slaughter, you need to wear your bandana at all times. When you've earned your place, your bandana will have teeth, like mine or Jessica's. For now, you will just wear the color of the hunter inducting you. Black.”
They say don't judge a book by it's cover but I only picked up the first 3 volumes of this Eisner Award Nominated graphic novel based only on the title and the cover art. I am so glad that I did.
Monsters are real and Erica Strange hunts them. In this volume, however, we go back in time to discover her origin story, as it were. From the killing of her parent's by a monster to her induction into the House of Slaughter.
We also learn more about the working of the Houses and the 'usual' process for recruiting new members.
Very much a volume to set the scene for a wider ranging Universe. However, it was just as good as the first three volumes and very much a must read for fans. 5 stars.
