The book is a bit challenging in vocabulary, some because of the changing manners of expression in Spanish since the early post-war years, and some because I am not as familiar with the slang and expressions of Argentina. Additionally, there is a significant amount of French present in the book, as much of the first part takes place in Paris. I am nearly finished with the first section and first book, which is read in order from the beginning. After this part, there is a second book which intersperses other chapters in between the chapters of the first book. I hope to read both books.
I really enjoyed this book, but it got difficult to deal with the flipping around in the second version of the book. It was really weird. But absolutely worth the work.

Possibly the greatest novel ever written. I read this both ways, one directly after the other. The differing attempts to place order, logic, cohesion, meaning onto a series of events, that sometimes feels meaningful, sometimes futile, sometimes trite, sometimes comical - and never quite workable. I return to the image of the strange one-woman concert at the centre of the book as a - tongue in cheek, certainly - metaphor for the book and its strange style itself. It's a novel which begs to be interpreted, yet defies interpretation at every corner.
Occasionally, when reality breaks in, the novel's philosophy seems to shatter, and then even its thesis comes into question.The most obvious moment here is the death of the baby, which threatens to shatter everything around it, as the one irreversible truth of lives that otherwise seem malleable and formless. And yet life goes on - or not, as the coherence of time as a logical arc is raised too.

5 estrellas. Sas! Genial. No importa que a mejor es un poco demasiado de su época, las temas son eternas y es una obra aparte de los de mas. De veras es única.

maybe i didnt get it, but i didnt really enjoy reading this. the concept is good, groundbreaking even, especially for when it was published, but had i not taken a class on the novel, i doubt i wouldve understood it, or even chosen to read it. the novel criticizes literature and authors of the moment, but doesnt make any overarching criticism or comment on larger themes of life, save for a minor critique of the bourgeoisie. meh, it was just ok
Primer libro que leo de Cortázar. Estoy algo arrepentido. Arrepentido por el hecho de que este libro fue fantástico, y aparentemente es de los mejores si no es que el mejor de este autor. Me entristece la posibilidad de haber experimentado lo mejor que me puede brindar este autor, no por el hecho de que no me haya gustado tanto y su demás trabajo me predispongo a que sea deficiente. Sino por el hecho de que al empezar con su Magnus Opus, no podré evitar compararlo al leer sus otras novelas.
Ahora, en sí, a hablar del libro. La única razón por la que le puse 4 estrellas y no 5 es porque creo que le pude haber sacado mucho más jugo al camino propuesto por Cortázar en su novela. Pero mis capacidades y conocimientos literarios no son suficientes para entender el suplicio horrible del Club de la Serpiente al reflexionar sobre Morelli y la literatura tan podrida que los (nos) rodea.
Tal vez en unos 20 años, algunos de las referencias y nombres mencionados no se pasen por encima de mi cabeza, ni pierdan ni difuminen su significado ante una cabeza que no los puede reconocer. Haré una nota mental de leer de nuevo esto en 20 años.
No se que puedo decir del libro que no se haya dicho ya muchas veces. Supongo que solamente puedo decir que si me dan ganas de leer una novela anti-novela, desempolvaré esta pieza y empiece de nuevo por el capitulo 73.

I found all the characters completely insufferable, and there is no plot or theme that is going on that makes it in any way compelling in spite of that.
Se me estaba haciendo mucha bola y no estaba conectando nada con la historia.
I would recommend reading it both ways — sequentially and as the author intended.
