This has been my first year exposed to Cortázar, and at first glance, I didn't see beyond the thought that he was following a creative line drawn by Borges, Casares and Rulfo. This was a mistake. Hopscotch will likely sell itself to you on its formal innovations, but I don't think this is the reason to read it. Cortázar writes excellent tension in a voice that is brainy and ambivalent. Loss is a central theme of hopscotch, but there is almost no grief depicted, in fact, it consciously and literally avoids grief. Where weaker writers would stumble, Cortázar flourishes, skipping over the easy beats in pursuit of the elusive ones. I think I will have much more to say after a second reading, but it's apparent to me now that Cortázar is a master worthy of his own category.

P.S. If you enjoy short stories "El Otro Cielo" will knock your socks off.
