Faithless

Faithless is the fifth book in the Grant County series by Karin Slaughter. And in every book, Slaughter has hooked me at page one. At the conclusion of the novel, I'm not ready to be done. To me, this is evidence of a truly great suspense novel.

Jeffrey and Sara literally stumble across a strange protrusion in the ground at the onset of this novel. That protrusion is some kind of pipe. What they find at the other end of that pipe is a box containing the murdered body of a young woman. As Jeffrey and Lena go to work investigating this murder, they discover a strange cult-like farm, and all the people on this farm become suspects. And if that isn't enough, Tessa, Sara's sister, has started attending church with these people. Meanwhile, Lena grapples with her unhealthy relationship to Ethan when her ex comes back into town.

Somehow Slaughter always manages to broach her topics in such a way that makes me question my own beliefs. I may not come out CHANGING my beliefs, but I look at them a little more closely and question how much they are based on knowledge and how much on sheer passion. I love that about her writing.

Slaughter's character development is just outstanding. In this book as in others she has a tendancy to tease you with stereotypes...to get you looking in the wrong direction. "Ha! Caught you falling into that one!" And then turns the whole plot on its head so you realize how hard you fell into the trap of the stereotype. Lev Ward and Cole Connelly are examples of this. And of course Lena is a constant example of this.

This was a definite page-turner for me.

Another book in the Grant County series. I like that each book gives more insight into the characters and you see them grow and develop. I also love that each book has a central mystery. This one was a bit more predictable than the others but I still really enjoyed it and it was a page turner that kept me up wanting to finish it.

I continue to read more and more of Karin Slaughter’s books and for the most part I really enjoy them. Sadly the last few Grant County books have just been ok and that includes this one. The premise of the book was intriguing, and I had higher expectations since I was not overly impressed with the last one. I figured every writer has their ok book but had hoped that this one would blow me away.

I think what really keeps me coming back to this series is the characters. I really enjoy the ups and downs of the main characters in her novels and I seem to be more interested in what is going on with them, than the actual plot of the story. This is a true testament to how well Slaughter develops her characters. It really pulls me in and keeps me coming back to her books.

I am currently reading her books in the order they were written, but I will say my favorite series by Slaughter, is the Georgia series which is her cross over novels between the main character of this book, Sara Linton, and her other series lead, Will Trent. Those two characters work perfectly together and I enjoy those quite a bit. I enjoy learning what came before they were paired up, and I will continue this series. I am still hopeful that the next book in the Grant County series is better.

This was my least favorite so far in the Grant County series. I feel like nothing was really even happening the entire time?? The last 25% was interesting though where they tied it all up and explained some things for the main characters we all know and love in this series.

I’m sad that there’s only one book left in this series but grateful I still have a whole other series by my favorite author Karin Slaughter to read!
