They always end so fast but I’ve got one more book left in this series

Feeling generous today, more like a 4.3

This is another good fast paced thriller in the Grant County series and finds Sara and Jeff making a morbid discovery in the woods leading them to a nearby farm run by a religious group as a halfway house and refuge for those who need it. Typically things are not quite as they seem and the pair quickly discover there is a lot going on beneath the surface of the farm than first thought. The story progresses well with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing and re-thinking your opinion of many of the characters. However I did find Sara somewhat tiresome as she felt the need to pretty much constantly guilt trip Jeff over his past indiscretions and their continuing impact on their lives (seriously love, if it bothers you that much why take him back?). And Lena could do with a reality check or two (easy to say given the circumstances, I know but still). I did love Bella, Sara aunt, though and I would've loved to have her in the story a bit more (as completely irrelevant as it would've been). Overall this is a really good read that keeps you engrossed from start to finish.

I am consistently disturbed, shocked and engaged by the stories that [a:Karin Slaughter|12504|Karin Slaughter|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1565730670p2/12504.jpg] finds and puts on the page. I don't know how she does it, but they are so immersive (and I can't say the word disturbing enough), thrilling and complex that I'm going to keep reading them.

Karin Slaughter does not cease to amaze me at the rate she is able to tell a story, and the thought, research and character development that goes into it. Faithless might not (for me) have been as amazing as the others, but it is by no means less of a book, to be sure. The read barrels along and presents an interesting story, and gives the characters we have grown to love more to fight through, deal with, and develop more.

Jeffrey and Sara never seem to catch a break. These two fit, but I still feel that Sara is selfish and entitled when it comes to Jeffrey, and he constantly allows her that. I know he screwed up in their past, but it takes two for a marriage to get to that place. Anyway. Also, her superiority when snapping at Hare was so uncalled for, because she, too, would have done exactly the same thing. It's almost as though she expects different treatment because it is her. Selfish.

Let's not even forget to mention Lena when it comes to selfish. That woman has wrecked herself completely. Like for reals. I know she went through crap, but instead of coming out stronger, she has collapsed, and Ethan still plays a large part in all going on with her. I also wish she was better to Hank. They are more similar than she realises, and she really treats him like crap.

Once again, Karin Slaughter shows that she is not scared to deal with real issues, things that affect people more than credit is given. The story is fast paced and detailed, I would expect no less. More character flaws and details are released in this story, as well as epiphanies that are reached, and the simplicity of honesty and friendship is highlighted. All in all, a very solid novel that is definitely worthy of joining the ranks of its predecessors.

I've always thought my dislike for this book stemmed from the Grant County ending being spoiled for me just before starting this specific book. But after this re-listen I've realised that, that's not the reason.
I just wasn't as invested in this story as the previous ones, and it felt unnecessarily drawn out.

I worship at the Altar of Slaughter but this one was just not good. Weakest in the series by far.
