Prosa realista fluida e triste

I enjoyed this book far more than I was expecting which was a pleasant surprise! The beginning moves quite slowly, but I would recommend persevering as I really got into the plot and couldn't wait to find out what happened to the characters next. De Balzac's characters were definitely the best part of the novel. They are so human, neither entirely good nor bad and thoroughly believable. I loved their development through the story and could picture each one of them as if they were in the room with me, even the more minor characters. The plot is basically about a young man desperate to break his way into high-class French society, and the sometimes unscrupulous means of achieving this, but once he does begin to break into this world, he finds that it is not necessarily all that he expected. I am definitely going to read some of de Balzac's other books now because I really liked this one. Plus he carries a lot of the characters from this book over into other novels, and I can't wait to find out what is next in their stories!

. . .but dumb dramas of life, frost-bound dramas that sere hearts like fire, dramas that do not end with the actors’ lives.

Père Goriot is a worthwhile read. The novel is not for everyone, it is not exciting and it does not reward the reader with happy endings. You will not finish it and find a feeling of warmth or comfort impressed upon you. Nonetheless, for many if not for all, the novel remains worthy of a read. I can say with confidence that I enjoyed it from the gritty details to the more dismal themes. Balzac has produced an image of human beings with their greed and their obsession, operating in the baser forms that a hierarchical society reduces them to. Little is sacred in Balzac’s Paris, least of all Goriot’s parental love. While the novel contains a wealth of insight into the world of nineteenth-century France, its messages are not obsolete in today's world. The social climbing mentality of Rastignac is not a foreign one in the current-day capitalistic societies where people continue to desire this upwards mobility into a world of wealth and circumstance. Generally, I regard Père Goriot as somewhat difficult read but a valuable one.

Set in a boarding house for low income people in Paris, Father Goriot ,a retired merchant , sacrifices everything for his two daughters but is ultimately heartbroken by their selfishness. The novel focus on  human selfishness, social class disparities, and the disintegration of family ties, while masterfully portraying how money corrupts people. Balzac’s writing is, as always, detailed yet remarkably fluid.
