I honestly could not possibly love this series more than I already do. I wouldn’t change a single thing and that says a lot. I feel that I’m going to re-read both books very soon because I will miss these characters if I don’t.

a lot of deaths! Emotional, sad and heart wrenching!

To be honest, starting this book I didn’t see how a sequel would add to the story but dipping back into Ada's world (and the memorable narration on audio) was such a delight. We begin where the previous book ended in the middle of WWII and get to know a few more characters, new and old. What I appreciated most were the frank discussions of death, acceptance of others, and Judaism vs Christianity that Ada's questioning heart brought to the surface with a child's ignorance, confusion, or sometimes anger. I could see this being a great read-aloud and source of discussion for mid to older elementary kids.

It was nice to be with these characters and back in this world again. This one wasn’t as strong as the first book in terms of emotion and detail. I found it kind of strange about the amount of ambiguity around Becky in the book. She was clearly Susan’s lover…do they just not talk about it because it was the 40s, or because the reader should infer it, or because it’s a middle grade book? I found that kind of odd that it was still vague by the end of the second book. The Jonathan story line was my favorite part. I also enjoyed Lady Thorton with Ada in London.

Such a beautiful and deep middle grades historical fiction series. One of my all-time favorites.
