Just as good as the first, if not better. Love Ada and her prickliness.

“Fear and what you did with it were two separate things.”
This was a beautiful and fantastic sequel to The War That Saved My Life. Just, everything about it added to the amazingness of the first book.
I honestly want to petition that these books be added to elementary/middle school curriculum because there is just so much to learn from these books. This book covers things like mental health and sociology really well with the main character, and it is (well) historical, as it is about WWII.
Characters. I feel like everything that I reviewed about the first book having to do with characters carried on perfectly and seamlessly into this sequel. We still saw incredible, realistic character development from Ada and Susan. I feel like Jamie's character could have been worked with a little more, but I wasn't unsatisfied at all. RUTH. I loved her character in this story. She brought a wonderful consideration of racial prejudice into this book, and it was the perfect amount--she was fantastic. And Lady Thornton. Wow, I have to say. The addition and focus on her character through her and her family's struggles were absolutely fantastic and greatly needed.
Plot. Well, the same things could be said about this plot as the last one, pretty much. It was fast-paced, enjoyable, heart-wrenching. Etc. etc..
Writing. Again, I don't have too much to say in this category that I haven't said for the previous review. Kimberly Brubaker Bradley is a fantastic author, and she really made this story come to life. I really, really want to pick up some of her other books now.
It has been so fun; I have read nothing but middle-grade books for the last week, and honestly, it has been an absolute blast. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this duology.
Have a wonderful evening

I did not love this quite as much as the first but it was still great and I highly recommend to anyone trying to give kids an introduction to WWII.

The War That Saved My Life was such a beautiful book, and this sequel definitely holds up to the original! I had been wanting to read this since it came out, and finally got my library hold through. As soon as it did I started in on this, and I read it in just a couple of hours over the span of two days. I was trying to make it last so I could really enjoy it, but I couldn't help myself. It was just that good!
Kimberly Brubaker Bradley has managed to create characters that are both believable and utterly human in nature. She manages to write in a way that really makes you feel things, and I don't know how she does it but she nails it perfectly every time. The story of Ada and her little family enthralled me in the first book, and it continued to enthrall me in this second installment. I enjoyed this one perhaps even more than the first, since we have a whole host of characters really thrown into the narrative. I loved getting to know more about the Thornton's, especially Jonathan, and to see their story unfold alongside Ada's. I enjoyed watching both her and Jamie grow, and to see how their relationship with Susan changed as time went on.
There was very little about this book that I didn't like! Even the parts that made me exceptionally emotional were wonderful, and I just wanted more, more, more. If Bradley decided to write a third book I would definitely read it, though I'd be just as happy if she decided to end the story here. I am just so in love with her writing style and character building, that I most certainly need to find some more of her books to read!
