Vos tik baigiau skaityti pirmąją šios knygų serijos dalį – ”Karas, išgelbėjęs mano gyvenimą” – antroji dalis mano rankose atsirado labai greitai. Tiesa, labai nenorėjau taip greitai perskaityti ir pabaigti abiejų dalių, tad padariau šiokią tokią pertrauką, kad pataupyčiau. O kam? Antrąją knygą perskaičiau per apytiksliai dvi dienas. Vadinasi pataupiau.
Antroje Kimberly Brubaker Bradley knygoje ”Karas, kurį galiausiai laimėjau” toliau pasakojama Ados ir Džeimso bei jų naujosios šeimos – Suzanos ir Tortonų giminės – gyvenimo istorija. Vokiečių bombai užkritus ant Bekės palikto namo Suzanai, ji su vaikais, Tortonams pasiūlus, persikėlė gyventi į jų turimą kotedžą. Gyvendami ten jie jaučiasi kiek sukaustyti: patalpų atmosfera ne tokia kaip buvusių namų, kur viskas buvo jauku ir širdžiai artima. Tiesa, laikai taip pat buvo pakitę: kariniai veiksmai suveržė šalies diržus dar labiau, maistas buvo ribojamas griežčiau, nuo bažnyčios smailės MST (moterų tarnybos) narės stebėdavo, kur kildavo gaisrai ir t.t. Visur tvyrojo įtampa.
Neramumai šalyje nesutrugdė Adai mėgautis jojimu, rūpintis Bateriu bei dirbti su Fredu arklidėse. Tai buvo pagrindinis dalykas, padėjęs mergaitei atitrūkti nuo kasdienybės ir pamiršti pasaulio problemas. Ji troško rūpintis Džeimsu ir darė viską, ką galėjo, kad tinkamai globotų Suzaną. Artimųjų sveikata ir saugumas Adai buvo svarbiau už ją pačią.
Gyvendami Tortonų kotedže Ada ir Džeimsas susiduria su įvairiais nutikimais, vienaip ar kitaip pakeitusiais jų požiūri. Jiems tenka išgyventi nemažai blogų įvykių, kėlusių nemalonius jausmus, sutrikdžiusių dar jautrias jų mintis. Taip pat jų gyvenamoje aplinkoje buvo ir daug gėrio: Suzanos rūpestis ir globa, broliška meilė, geriausios draugės Megės vizitai, suartėjimas su Džonatanu ir apskritai visa Tortonų šeima bei dar daugelis mažų, bet reikšmingų džiaugsmų. Kad ir karo pavojus neleido jiems atsipalaiduoti, vaikai su Suzana visuomet rasdavo būdų, kaip praskaidrinti niūrią kasdienybę, kaip pavojingame laikotarpyje atrasti bent šlakelį laimės. O kai ta laimė pasislėpdavo tamsiausioje ir didžiausioje oloje, šviečiant žvaigždėms, jie visuomet turėjo į ką atsiremti - vienas kitą.
Ši istorija mane visiškai pavergė. Niekuomet nesitikėjau, kad taip sužavės. Autorės rašymo stilius man labai patiko, buvo lengvas, skaitėsi lyg per sviestą, tačiau nebuvo ir paprastas, kai reikdavo, griebdavo už širdies stipriai. Ir antrąją dalį skaitant buvo vietų, kur susigraudinau ir turėjau kiek pristabdyt, kad nepradėčiau raudot. Žinoma, esu labai empatiškas ir jautrus žmogus, bet ir be to, manau, toks jausmingas pasakojimas gali paliesti kiekvieno širdelę. Pabaigus skaityti istoriją toks jausmas, lyg pati būčiau Ados ir Džeimso globėja. Labai įsijaučiau į knygą, ji išlaikė mano susidomėjimą iki pat paskutinių puslapių ir galiausiai, pasibaigus žodžiams ant baltų lapų, paleido, nors visai nesinorėjo.
Abi Kimberly Brubaker Bradley romanai („Karas, išgelbėjęs mano gyvenimą“ & „Karas, kurį galiausiai laimėjau“) neabejotinai keliauja į mano 2020 metų mėgstamiausių knygų sąrašą. Ši knygų serija visiškai suminkštino manąją širdį, leido atsipūsti, bet tuo pačiu metu ir mokėjo surimtėti, kai to reikėjo. Trumpai tariant, lengva, bet gera istorija. Autorė visiškai apsuko man galvą! O kodėl ne visos penkios ⭐️? Tiesiog pirmos serijų dalys dažnai būna geresnės už sekančias.
Už šiuos puikius kūrinius rašytojai be galo dėkoju ir rekomenduoju abi serijos dalis perskaityti net ir vyresniems, kadangi knyga puikiai tiks įvairaus amžiaus žmonėms, ir netgi gali tapti puikia šventine dovana.

Somehow I loved this one even better than book 1! I really enjoyed reading the continuation of Ada’s journey and how she grew as a person (and Lady Thornton too!). Definitely recommend and would read again.
It has been almost three years since I read the first book in this series and I don't know why I waited so long to pick up the second. The first book was lovely and tender and beautiful and this one may have been even more so. I found myself giggling out loud several times at Ada's innocent lack of knowledge, and my heart swelled with love for this girl as she found out who she really was after her horrific first few years of life. She is just a gem. So are the lovely people she finds herself surrounded by...characters from the first book along with several new faces. This series is really great.
Fantastically written! Blends both fiction and true historical events seamlessly. Ada continues to deal with her demons while growing up. She learns compassion, empathy, forgiveness, and how to love. This was such a well-written sequel to The War that Saved my life. If you haven't read these books you should!

oh, the feels! This sequel to The War that Saved My Life is just as good as the first book--just with more tears. It's lovely to see how Ada and Jamie progress in their emotional growth and healing (and Ada's physical healing), and how they build relationships not only with Susan, but others around them who care about them too.
This is a book set in war time, and, especially considering that this is a children's book, is unflinching in looking at the realities of British life in WWII England. The gradually tightening rations and restrictions and shortages. Blackouts. Night watches for bombing. Dead pilots and downed planes. Injuries and serious illnesses. Grief over lost loved ones. Suspicion of potential spies. Anti-German sentiment. The reality of life for German Jews, both those who escaped before the war, and those left behind. All of this feel more real, more immediate, now that Ada's family life is more secure, and she can pay closer attention to the world and people around her and then relate it to us.
The Thorntons as a whole really grew on me, as well as on Ada. Fred, as kind as ever, plays less of a role in this story, as does Stephen White, but new characters, such as Ruth, are introduced as great additions to the dynamics of the story.
The tension of war-time life, and of Ada's constant vigilance, both personal and war-time, are maintained skillfully throughout the story, and leave you guessing until the very end. At one point near the very end of the story, I found myself shouting at the audio book, "You'd better not do [that]! Haven't you put us through enough!?". However, have no fear; the end is sufficiently heartwarming and satisfying to reward the reader for all the tears and fears before.
Also, the audio is read again by Jayne Entwhistle, who once again does an lovely job bringing all the characters to life. Highly recommended in audio format as well as paper.

I keep getting into reading ruts and Kimberly Brubaker Bradley keeps fishing me out with incredibly engaging middle-grade novels.
Ada Smith is back, almost exactly where we left off. Still surviving the war, but this time with her defining feature-a club foot-fixed up. Follow Ada’s adventures as she has to move into Lady Thorton’s cottage, volunteer with the fire watch, and... live with a German??? The enemy???
Kimberly Brubaker Bradley has a magical way of creating middle-grade novels that are more engaging for me than some adult novels I’ve read. I love the character of Ada so so much. I think she’s so well written and the bluntness of her words and thoughts is so poignant to me.
There was one moment, as I lay in bed last night reading at 2:30 am, that I just started sobbing. I’ve been overly emotional lately but still.
These are heavy books, so if you do have children, perhaps read it before or with them so you can decide if it’s something they’re ready for. It’s got a lot of room for excellent discussions.
But ugh. So so good and I’ve read opinions that say these are Bradley’s best works, but I’m excited to read some of her other books as well.

I have so many books to read that I normally just try to read the first book in a series; sequels are not a priority for me. However, I (and my students) LOVED The War That Saved My Life sosomuch that I HAD to read its follow up, The War I Finally Won.
I am forever glad I did. This historical fiction about trust, bravery, and family will stay with me for such a long time. I daresay I may have liked it better than the first one - and that's saying something! The War I Finally Won is particularly relevant in today's politically unstable climate and, as such, is an important read for both children and adults. I can't wait to book talk this book pair with my students.
