This gorgeous book took my breath away. Actually. I read it at ALA Annual, and when I finished, I looked around to find someone to just feel with because the emotions were overflowing within me! The celebration of art and family and the feeling of being stuck between two worlds and not being to connect with a family member were all things that just touched me. It is a book that I had to own, I now will buy for so many people, and I cannot wait to share with my students and my son.

One of my secrets is I love reading children’s books- this one especially- it is light on words, which I found great for interactive kid reading- ei kids who are really into asking questions about images or making up elaborations on the story based on what they see. This worked great for some kindergarteners I know- but I’m curious to see in the reviews what age ranges did and didn’t respond to this one.

This book highlights the struggle when you and a loved one are experiencing a language barrier but also find a way to connect and show your love and care for one another. It also shows a glimpse of cultural art and how it can differ from generation to generation.

Source: Booklist
Age Range: 5-7
Evaluation of Quality: The illustrations are framed loosely like a graphic novel, which draws the reader into the story through the dynamism of the colors and sketches
Assessment of potential use: This would make for a good story time book for school and especially for a home with bilingual Vietnamese/English family members.
Assessment of appeal to children: Children will love the super hero-like drawings of the main character and his Grampa as they go on drawing adventures.

*Drawn Together by Minh Le is absolutely stunning. It will certainly be making my favorites list this year. It is a solid contender for the Caldecott this year. The story and illustrations are absolutely beautiful. Due to a language barrier, a boy and his grandfather have difficulty communicating with each other. Through drawing, they discover a deep, magical connection with each other. This book pulled at my heart. It is one that I will remember for a long time.

Age: K-2
Genre: Contemporary Realistic Fiction
This picture book is really great. The illustrator makes the pictures come to life. It shows the generation gaps that can happen and how all it takes is one thing to connect each other. This book can be used as a tool for kids and parents alike especially if there is issues connecting with one another.

Such a beautiful book about the power of art to draw us together despite our differences or distance. I love seeing books about grandparents and grandkids and seeing this one about a young boy and his grandfather finding common ground is phenomenal. Clearly, I’m a Santat and Le fan!

My children and I grabbed a lot of books from Minh Lê and I would have a hard time picking a favorite because they are all so, so good, and this book is no exception. The illustrations are incredible and I love the way wordless pages blend into the story of a grandparent and grandchild finding their way together through art and story. It’s magnificent and my 3, 4, 7, and 8 year olds loved it, especially my older two.
