My children and I grabbed a lot of books from Minh Lê and I would have a hard time picking a favorite because they are all so, so good, and this book is no exception. The illustrations are incredible and I love the way wordless pages blend into the story of a grandparent and grandchild finding their way together through art and story. It’s magnificent and my 3, 4, 7, and 8 year olds loved it, especially my older two.

Such a beautiful story of a grandson and grandpa with a language barrier. I often felt like this with my Portuguese grandma while I was growing up. I wish I’d had this book to lean on. ❤️

I swear that I've read this book before but I apparently have never rated it. I absolutely adore this book. Everything about it speaks to me--the art, the plot, the distinct characters and representation. This book is perfect for showing exactly how one can connect through something other than words. It's beautiful and I highly recommend it.
For: fans of art or those looking for a book that shows intergenerational connection.
Possible red flags: some may find the dragon too scary.

I feel in love immediately - powerful illustrations and sparse text take readers through the journey of a boy and his grandfather connecting without words but through drawing. I love that this is a picture book that is also structured like a graphic novel, which will appeal to older children reading the book.

What a powerful double-punch of talent. Minh Lê’s story combined with Dan Santat’s magical, lush illustrations conveys the frustrating emotion of language barriers, be they actual spoken language or generational, and the joy of finding a common thread. The words are sparse in this beautiful book and, thus, rely heavily on the artwork to tell the story and express feelings. A do-not-miss on both Minh Lê and Dan Santat’s bibliographies.

Drawn Together is a very powerful and emotional book with so few words that it touches the hearts of all who may read by using art in order to close the communication barrier by the two characters in the book. The illustrations in this book are beautifully done and convey its message that regardless of language barriers there are other ways to communicate with others and find a happy medium to better understand one another.
