Although sorely dated, this is a fun, engaging read.

It features a quasi-James Bond hero, and that's really all you need to know. There's thrills, action, and, of course, a healthy dollop of the sexism and racism inherent in this type of book. I am told that the books improve significantly after this one -- the author basically says that in his introduction -- so I'll keep going through the series for some more escapism.

I finally started reading the Dirk Pitt series and I had a lot of fun reading this one! I read this after reading several of the Game of Thrones books and it was such a great change of pace to jump into a fast adventure with lots of interesting settings.

The story was okay but Cussler's treatment of Pitt's romantic interests is way too sudden and leaves much to be desired.
