It's been a hot minute since I read the first book in the Emily Wilde series, but this one is just as good as the first. I may have to get the paperback versions when the trilogy is complete (foolish of me to think it was just going to be a duology).

Wendall, of course, is my favorite, closely followed by Shadow. Emily herself is a hit or miss - she's so wrapped up in herself that she refuses to see logic the majority of the time (at least, what logic there can be when you're dealing with the fae), and gets herself and her companions into a whole bunch of messes that are unnecessary, to say the least.

She spends the majority of the book dancing around Wendall's marriage proposal, and the rest of the book ignoring the common sense that everyone else seems to have aside from her.

There are a few things that seemed to come out of nowhere -
like de Grey being the one that's been banging on their cabin door in the nights, which seemed odd to me? How did Emily guess that it was her?
But overall, the story was good, and I'm interested in seeing what happens when Emily and Wendall continue their journey back into Wendall's kingdom.

Wendall, truly, is the only one with any sense here.

An excellent sequel to a gripping and immersive tale of the fae. I loved being dropped into the lore and finding myself along for the ride, but not lead by random chance. Every mention lead to something later on, each piece of the adventure was revisited and important, and it demonstrates the care and thought the author put into weaving this story together. I'm already looking forward to book three!

Absolutely excellent, I am actually obsessed. Wendell and Emily's relationship progression was so fun, and I loved also having Ariadne and Rose along for the ride was so entertaining. I am incredibly hyped for book 3.

Super charming as was the first one. I liked the first one a little more but this was exactly what I had hoped: a fun faerie tale with lovable characters and new magical pieces around every corner! Excited for book 3!

The BEST relationship dynamic is a grumpy x sunshine that goes both ways. And thatโ€™s all i have to say on that. Iโ€™m not sure what it is about this writing style (maybe the journal entry format?) but i just find that Iโ€™m not as engaged reading as i should be. I FEEL like this should be a 5 star but it wasnโ€™t?? idk

STILL REELING OVER THIS, I LOVED IT SO MUCH. this took what i loved in the first and made it even better - it was just as charming, fun and hilarious. emily and wendell have one of the best banters and their relationship is so incredibly endearing and wholesome ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ’“ i liked the new characters, and i liked seeing old ones return as well
POE ๐Ÿ’—

as always, emily's diary entries are interesting and fascinating to read, but im always on the lookout for
the one wendell pov chapter, it's always so cute to see how he admires emily so much ๐Ÿ‰

this was SO CLOSE to a 5 star, but there were a few moments where i was a teeny bit bored. overall, it was a fantastic sequel, and i cannot wait for the third book.
especially since it'll take place partly (or mostly?) in faerie land with WENDELL AND EMILY GAHH ๐Ÿ™‡๐ŸงŽ

While I think I liked the first book just a bit more, I still was very happy with this sequel. I enjoyed the new characters, but the villagers (and the village itself, really) weren't a focus for this one, and I think that's mostly what I missed. The attention centered more on Emily and Wendell, which was also nice because I do love them both. They strongly remind me of Howl and Sophie from HMC, especially with how they tease one another.

The plot was a bit trickier for me to follow on audiobook and I felt like a few too many climactic points were settled with vague fae magic. But overall, it was a very fun and adventurous read.

I'm still head over heels for the uniqueness of a fantasy novel written in 1st person diary entries. And Fawcett continues to mesmerize me in the same way Barker does with Abarat. Descriptions of things that are clearly supposed to be horrific and disturbing are so artfully done, that I instead find myself fascinated and morbidly curious. I normally avoid anything close to horror, but Fawcett manages to make it... cozy? It's hard to explain, but it's masterful and paints such a vivid fae world, where beauty and horror exist hand in hand.

Both books are wonderful and I highly recommend them! Can't wait for the next!

This book had its entire action section lopped together in the last 50 pages. I highly enjoyed the plot...when it finally happened. It just felt, in my opinion, like it took an extremely unnecessary long time to build up to that point. Loved the first book, but this sequel was not for me, unfortunately.
