STILL REELING OVER THIS, I LOVED IT SO MUCH. this took what i loved in the first and made it even better - it was just as charming, fun and hilarious. emily and wendell have one of the best banters and their relationship is so incredibly endearing and wholesome ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ’“ i liked the new characters, and i liked seeing old ones return as well
POE ๐Ÿ’—

as always, emily's diary entries are interesting and fascinating to read, but im always on the lookout for
the one wendell pov chapter, it's always so cute to see how he admires emily so much ๐Ÿ‰

this was SO CLOSE to a 5 star, but there were a few moments where i was a teeny bit bored. overall, it was a fantastic sequel, and i cannot wait for the third book.
especially since it'll take place partly (or mostly?) in faerie land with WENDELL AND EMILY GAHH ๐Ÿ™‡๐ŸงŽ

While I think I liked the first book just a bit more, I still was very happy with this sequel. I enjoyed the new characters, but the villagers (and the village itself, really) weren't a focus for this one, and I think that's mostly what I missed. The attention centered more on Emily and Wendell, which was also nice because I do love them both. They strongly remind me of Howl and Sophie from HMC, especially with how they tease one another.

The plot was a bit trickier for me to follow on audiobook and I felt like a few too many climactic points were settled with vague fae magic. But overall, it was a very fun and adventurous read.

I'm still head over heels for the uniqueness of a fantasy novel written in 1st person diary entries. And Fawcett continues to mesmerize me in the same way Barker does with Abarat. Descriptions of things that are clearly supposed to be horrific and disturbing are so artfully done, that I instead find myself fascinated and morbidly curious. I normally avoid anything close to horror, but Fawcett manages to make it... cozy? It's hard to explain, but it's masterful and paints such a vivid fae world, where beauty and horror exist hand in hand.

Both books are wonderful and I highly recommend them! Can't wait for the next!

Emily is sooooo cool. I wish I had even half the tenacity, love, passion, and knowledge for anything the way she does for dryadology. This was such a good continuation of the first book and, while I hate that I'll now have to wait for the third installment to come out, I'm very happy to have something to look forward to as I know Heather Fawcett will release another novel that's on par to the previous two. I adore the cozy sort of magic she's able to soak these stories in, while providing adventure against such vivid and expansive backdrops. I loved getting to know Emily and Wendell in the first book, and now the loveliness of seeing more of them and watching their relationship develop. A great romance (and book) to me is when you can enjoy the characters separately as well as together, and Emily and Wendell are equally as strong and charming together as they are individually. It's so sweet seeing how far their relationship has come and how much care they have for each other, and of course I must include how strongly it warms my heart whenever we see a journal entry from Wendell and to witness the way he views Emily.

I'm also very happy, and relieved, to conclude this novel without seeing any deaths from our beloved characters, and instead were able to see even more of Shadow and Poe. They are two of the most sweetest companions, and what a treasure it is to be claimed as their fjรถlskylda.

After struggling with the journal structure in book one, I switched to audio for book two, and that made all the difference. The narration helped the journal style to feel more natural, and Elle Potter conveyed so much personality for each character that I felt far more invested in the story (and I finally felt like I had a sense of Emily!). I could always tell when we moved to a footnote (bonus points to Potter, she always made it distinct!) and the moments of self awareness (and the moments of obfuscation) felt so much more obvious to me this time.

This series is the definition of cozy fantasy. While we have violence and injury (and mortal peril) the circumstances are so fantastic that they never feel truly dark. I loved seeing the relationship between Emily and Wendell deepen in this book, and so enjoyed their partnership throughout. This is closed door romance with such sweetness and sincerity, and I just loved it.

I loved the Narnia-esque moments in this installment, and the light comedy of our obsessively clean and tidy Wendell and ink-stained Emily. Of course he's a cat person (IYKYK). And the setting (the Alps!) was so fun. An expectedly surreal and raucous third act, and a perfect conclusion to set up our next adventure.

Love the tone of these books - it is lighthearted but sprinkled with some serious moments, has romance but not smut, has interesting and detailed lore without being boring - what more could you want!? The characters keep evolving and growing and its great to see.

This book had its entire action section lopped together in the last 50 pages. I highly enjoyed the plot...when it finally happened. It just felt, in my opinion, like it took an extremely unnecessary long time to build up to that point. Loved the first book, but this sequel was not for me, unfortunately.
