This is so out of control and morally questionable every step of the way. I finished it in one sitting

A slow burn, full of dread. You know something bad is going to happen, but it takes a while to get there. I hadn't seen the movie, so I didn't know exactly what to expect, and it was even grimmer than I'd imagined. Random thing that bugged me: the wife character takes her newborn with her to her job at the public library. Sorry, folks. Even in the 80s I can't imagine this happening. Totally took me out of the story.

Well, that was interesting. I definitely could see how this book may have influenced Gillian Flynn's books. Still, a very engrossing read as seems typical from Scott Smith.

I've never rooted more for a narrator to get what they had coming then when Hank was robbing the store at the end. I think it may have been a better ending to have Hank killed and then flash to Sarah getting arrested as she's living the high life.duparker's review

This is a creepy and unsettling book. It asked questions that are hard to answer and makes you really look at character and values in a way a fiction books are not normally meant to do. The overall story unfolds in a way you someone expect but with an ending that is uncomfortable, yet correct.

this is what deceit and greed do to men. what a truly suspenseful and f*cked up read - loved it sm!! the tension was immaculate, Smith is a master of his craft.
I’m so sad Scott Smith has only written two novels, both of which were 5 stars and honestly, quite different. Tbh anything he would write prob be a 5 star from me bc his writing is addicting and thrilling. One of my favorite authors :)
