LOVED this book! I was curious about its suitability for my school library, so i took it along to Y7 camp. Read the first chapter aloud to a small group of girls and they were keen to know how Jamie's dilemma would be resolved. They requested (strongly) that I purchase it asap (the copy I had was from the public library). I especially like that Lapinsky interspersed definitions of key terms within the narrative, rather than having a glossary in the back. This is a very sensitively presented story, skillfully written by an author with lived experience as a non-binary person. I though I understood until I read Jamie explaining about having to CHOOSE which toilets to use, and that buying clothes is problematic, because there are always "men's" and "women's" sections, not just CLOTHES.

This is such an important book, especially for a younger readers it just... almost read like a textbook sometimes and the conversations with adults never felt realistic, the easy forgiveness of Jamie's transphobic parents didn't sit well with me. The resolution at the end of the story became a little too far fetched but I liked that it was a cute, hopeful story. I don't know! I'm conflicted!

This story is perfect for young reads, and I believe it belongs in every school library, whether that's to learn about others, finding yourself, or helping others. It's a brilliant story where the main character Jamie faces a tough decision of which high school to attend. One is a boys' school, and the other is a girls' school. However, as Jamie has no specific gender they face a tough decision, so he decides to start a protest. With the school, friends, and others supporting him, Jamie wins the fight while making everyone aware of different people's, genders, and terms. Between each chapter is a bit of information about many different terms, explained simply. It was a brilliant book to read in June. Pride Month. I really enjoyed it. A well-deserved four stars.
