I didn't like this as much as Bora Chung's other short story collections, but there were still a lot of very interesting concepts explored. A little bit too much on the body horror side though, not as much of a fan of that

The bad part of short story collections is that there's bound to be a few that are a miss.

I'm not sure if I use a different scale than the top-rated reviews, but I'm not sure if I'd characterise this as horror or grotesque. It has to be horror (literary horror?), because it can't be any other genre, but I can't say I felt horrified much at anything. Vaguely surprised, at most? But positively so!

I get why people like it.

While I didn't love every story, some of them really got me in the feels. "The Head," where a woman is haunted by her bodily waste, had me absolutely chilled at the end. And "The Embodiment," where a pregnant woman is told she must find a father for her baby or face dire consequences, had me feeling all the ragey vibes.

Sometimes, short does it real well and these ones definitely pull a punch!

bora chung's writing is both brutal and perfect, making me feel like cheering all the way through. the stories are disturbing and vividly realized due to the author's meticulous and matter-of-fact writing style. the plots flow smoothly, leaving me unable to stop reading despite the unsettling feeling they invoke.

my favorite story in the collection is "the head," which is a tale of a woman being tortured by a creature that appears in her toilet. It is an oddly upsetting yet surreally humorous story that puts the reader on edge from the very beginning.

cursed bunny is an outstanding read for anyone looking for something truly mind-blowing. anton hur did a wonderful job with the translation, making it an easy and quick read.
