A Single Man

Christopher Isherwood

4.03 AVERAGE

A gloomy and fantastically detailed snapshot of a a day in the life of one man. Isherwood captures all that happens to this one man during the course of a day, and manages to provide the reader with enough information to really know this man. An American classic.

Christopher Isherwood's classic is a relatable and convincing study of the loss of a beloved person in your life and the aftereffects of dealing with the empty void left behind. Beautifully written.

This book was such a weird read, as in beautifully sad (or maybe sadly beautiful?) but also so twisty/tortuous/sinuous? Made me think of my HS Philosophy professor's lectures

Voyeuristic, reflective, yearning and restrained. It’s always nice to read gay literature, especially with it being such a taboo at the time it was published. I didn’t really warm to the main character but I understood him and felt for him. Perhaps I would have warmed to him more if it was a longer novel, but then I don’t think the story would have represented what it does as a whole, in that case.
