This book was wonderful. If you read the description, you’ll know immediately that there are some heavy topics & heartaches covered. I was VERY nervous at first that it would be too heavy to enjoy. Somehow this writing allows you to entertain these thoughts without feeling hopeless.
This book is about allowing us to walk alongside Phoebe on her journey, and it was beautiful. Although the writing and characters do wonders to alleviate some pain from these topics, the heaviness exists. It’s important to take care of your mental health while reading, and definitely check all content warnings.
There is significant reference to the COVID pandemic & how it affected the characters, reference to what it was like when people were tryin to re-adjust. If you’re sensitive to thinking about that time, read with caution.

I don't even know if this book was that good- I think it just found me at the perfect time. It felt quiet and satisfying, funny and intentional. Quite the magic trick to make you want to be a suicidal divorcee!

I can absolutely understand the hype of this book.

This was such a great read. The characters were so great, the storylines all flowed together so well.

The writing was great and different. Instead of all dialogue being written out in traditional quotes, it often included a bit of the quoted back and forth and then followed with a little paragraph summarizing what the rest of the conversation was about. It was a fantastic way to add the extra context without feeling like the dialogue was being overdone.

I hope there’s a second book so we can follow where all these characters go from here!

I would recommend checking trigger warnings. It has a dark themes and it's presented as a positive uplifting book. I might have rated it higher but for some reason that false presentation didn't sit well with me. I try not to do much online research on books before reading them but it feels necessary with this book.

DID NOT FINISH: 3%

Probably an unpopular opinion, though I’m immune compromised and disabled so whatever, but I cannot stand when authors choose to write in the pandemic and then ignore that the pandemic is ongoing. Phrases like “after the pandemic I have no friends” really eat at me. If you choose to write in the pandemic at least be accurate about it.

Went into The Wedding People blind and really should’ve read a content warning first—suicide, infidelity, pet loss, death of a spouse. It hit hard, but also made me laugh, tear up, and feel so much. Emotional, warm, and unexpectedly beautiful. 5 stars.

Review: The Wedding People by Alison Espach

“Love is visible—it paints the air between two people a different color, and everyone can see it”

God, this fucking book. Where to even start. I read it at the perfect time and everything hit exactly right for me. First and foremost, the writing is superb and it is blatant from page one that Espach is a master at her craft. My favorite book of all time is Jane Eyre, as is clearly Espach’s. She pays tribute to a classic perfectly while completely subverting the marriage plot in a contemporary way. This book is like opening a window on the sea air and feeling the spray from the Atlantic. It’s like finding the beauty in a foggy British moor (located in Newport). Phoebe’s character is lush and complicated. Gary and Lila add perfect and dynamic foil to Phoebe’s life and thoughts. I would read anything Espach published. 5 stars easily.
