Starts pretty darn dark but finds its spark and joy quickly. My only wish is that we got more of the characters next chapter at the end of the story.

The beginning of the book was a little hard to get through with how much it focused on her suicidal thoughts. I honestly almost DNF’d the book because it was hard to read at the beginning, but
after she survived the suicide attempt and the story became more about her learning how to live again and the wedding
, it did get better. I do think the author handled the topic well, it was just very heavy and not what I was expecting from a book that was described as being incredibly funny.

One pain point for me with the story though is I honestly struggled with connecting to any of the characters. I didn’t find most of them likeable and sometime things just felt off to me,
like Phoebe trying to be more honest but then openly lying about knowing Lila and randomly becoming her maid of honor or Jim hitting on both Lila and Phoebe and even Phoebe sleeping with her husband at the end even if she did ultimately tell him she didn’t want to continue
. I did really enjoy Juice’s character though. I feel like she added an extra layer to the story and the challenges that all of the characters were facing;
Gary with mourning his wife’s death while trying to move on and raise his daughter, Lila with trying to be this perfect person for everyone even though she clearly didn’t want to be come a mom at that point, and Phoebe with her infertility struggles and desperately wanting to be a mom

I wasn’t a huge fan of this writing style though which made it hard to read at times, especially with how some of the conversations were seemingly summarized in a paragraph instead of writing it out. It made it a little hard to follow at times when it would jump from active conversation to a paragraph just describing what was discussed.

I do think overall it was a good book and I enjoyed reading it after getting through the first quarter, it just wasn’t my favorite book and that’s okay. I can see the appeal and why some people absolutely love it, but I can also understand why for some people, it wasn’t their cup of tea.

As someone who has grown up in New England and going to Rhode Island often to visit family and even living there at points, it was fun to read for that aspect, especially the callout about how a 30 minute drive might as well be a destination wedding since my family always jokes about how a 15 minute drive might as well be a vacation in Rhode Island. The author was definitely able to capture Rhode Island in this story as well as some of my favorite parts of Newport.

I do think this was worth the read, I just wish that there was a little more of an indication how dark the beginning would be versus the jacket description making it seem like Phoebe was just there to shuck oysters and blow all her money on a fun weekend for herself while dealing with splitting from her husband.
