Although I am rating this book highly, I don’t think that it’s for everyone. In fact, I wouldn’t really recommend this book to most people. To some extent the description of the book does a disservice to readers because the description is only the surface of what the book is about. And I get that the editors probably wanted to leave it to a surprise to readers what the book is about, but at the same time this book is very dark and I hesitate to recommend it to people.
With all of that said, despite the fact that this book deals with very dark themes, the author is able to write about the themes with a humor that I found very enjoyable to read.
Since this is my first book of the year in 2025, I have a bit of hesitancy rating at five stars, but like one of the main characters says sometimes things just feel right and it’s hard to tell if it feels right because it’s the timing or just because it is right. And perhaps I’ll never know but what I do know is that I did enjoy reading this book and it did make me laugh out loud and it gave me a lot of things to think about without being too heavy ended. Although at some points it did feel a little heavy handed with the messaging. But I think given the dark themes, I appreciated the fact that the author wrote in third person to convey the overall messages of the book, and that helped it not feel as heavy handed as if the book was written in first person.
My one gripe with the book is not even with the book it’s with the acknowledgments at the end of the book. I love reading the acknowledgments generally, but these acknowledgments felt like an author, pretending to be an author writing acknowledgments. The acknowledgments did not feel like the rest of the book, except for the last paragraph of the them. In other words, what I love about acknowledgments is when the author adds another layer to the story by saying something along the lines of I wrote this book because I struggled through this hard time or I wrote this book because I read this article and it reminded me of this but here there was nothing about that really except for briefly in the last paragraph of the acknowledgments. And I know an author doesn’t owe me anything more or anything at all than what is in the book, but I just hoped for more because I really enjoyed the voice of the author in the book.
If you don’t get triggered by anything kudos to you. But if you do, I highly suggest that you look at the content warnings and consider if you are mentally prepared or in a good state to read the book. If you are then this will be a very enjoyable read. If you’re not then consider picking this up another time or reading some of the authors other works because I know I am curious to read the author’s backlog because I do think that this author has a great writing style.
