Not sure what I want to say about this book yet. It had its faults, but as a whole was effective at delivering a powerful and inspiring message, one that I hope to come back to again & again.

I went into this thinking it’d be a fun, light read but it was so much darker and more raw than I was expecting. I was rooting for every character, and there were certain moment I just had to pause and reflect on my own life. It had me thinking a lot about what I want and how to ask for it — and not just be a passenger in life.

Really really beautiful character development, and a great read for anyone going through a life slump.

I will say the writing felt a little strange in that it was written in the third person but mostly focused on Phoebe, so anytime we got a glimpse into someone else’s mind it took me out of it for a second.

a very funny, weird, and unexpectedly moving book. touches on things like grief, mental illness, change, adulthood.

I went into it blindly, so didn’t know where it was going at first. but I ended up loving it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this read, which feels like a perfect beach book to me. While The Wedding People could be viewed has being anchored by a very dark theme, the humor and sarcasm of and about the main characters actually make it feel lighthearted. I didn’t necessarily find the characters’ transformations inspiring, but their dilemmas and heartaches are totally relatable.  Finally, the backdrop of Newport, RI made this story a delight to imagine.

It took me a minute to get invested, but once I did, I was IN. Phoebe’s outsider status on a rich Nantucket wedding provides a frank critique, but the author doesn’t stop there. As Phoebe becomes invested in the lives of the “wedding people,” she becomes one of them and is drawn into the machinations and polite dishonesty of a wedding weekend. Her “friendship” with perfectionist bridezilla Lila provides a character foil that highlights the importance of knowing and naming what you really want, deep down. I had very mixed feelings about the fact that Phoebe slept with her husband at the end - I was screaming NO at the audio - but I also understand this as her saying goodbye to the relationship on her own terms, as empowered. The ending back in the hot tub with Gary was chef’s kiss perfect - less is more - yet I can clearly imagine the happily ever after found family of Phoebe and Toast and Gary and their adopted dogs.

CW: suicide (and more)

I felt moved by the journey our main character, Phoebe, took during this novel after arriving at an incredibly fancy hotel with the goal of killing herself. this is a story broken up into different days during the Wedding Week of the strangers at the same hotel. I was surprised to find myself drawn in by the majority of the side character's stories as well.

written in a more direct, blunt way that fits the main character very well. pretty Sad and Reflective and Real throughout with some comedic relief as well

I'm a fan
