It’s not always that a book lives up to the hype but this one does. I loved it and I already miss the characters.

Started bleak but ended up  realistically hopeful. Insightful, reflective, and funny at times.

I really enjoyed this! Very existential (obviously) and at times perhaps a bit pretentious, but overall a great message to keep enduring even though life is hard and unpredictable.

And as a side note, I love a book taking place in New England, especially in Rhode Island, which was the start of my next chapter of life as well. Similarly, I’m going to Newport for a wedding this coming weekend, so the timing of reading this somehow aligned perfectly! (I did have to laugh about all these rich assholes coming from places like Cranston and Pawtucket…rich assholes do not live in The Bucket lmfao).

I liked:
  • pulled me in from the beginning, loved the premise
  • loved the reflections that are everpresent in this book, if you are a perfectionist and people pleaser you will find bits of yourself in Phoebe
  • i don't think there was a single character i really liked - which is a pro, because i am sick of too likable characters, these felt more real, but also a con, because it made it harder to get through
  • the ending - we get closure, but a lot of it stays open and i really enjoyed that, it was a nice break from usual grand romantasy moments

Didn't like:
  • the writing style - however sometimes it suited the story
  • it started falling flat for me after the first night. I don't regret finishing it, but there was a point where I felt a bit bored and uninterested, had to push through a little bit and wondered if it's worth it

I loved the idea of it and there were some amazing reflections in it that I think many people can relate to, which is probably part of the hype. I think Phoebe is an interesting character to analyze in a book club or high school or something, but if I am rating how much I enjoyed it, I can't rate it higher, cause it didn't keep the interest it sparked in me at the very beginning.
