I think this is the point in the series where maybe it should have ended already.

Oh the plot is just as intricate as ever, it's just that it's been intricate for five volumes now and quite frankly I'm having a hard time following exactly what is going on, or why characters are doing what they're doing.

I'm still eager to see how the conflict between Light, Near and Mello resolves, and whether Light achieves his dream of a "perfect" world. I'm also enjoying how Light's complex position is making it increasingly difficult for him to keep control of the death note.

In short, I am enjoying the series, it's just that it's been so complex for so long now, I've sort've lost sight of things.

Still, only one volume to go. It'll be interesting to see how it wraps up.

Oh, the dismissive sexism is still there too, as utterly unnecessary and purposeless as ever.

This was definitely my least favourite volume, but come the ending I am eager to see how this series wraps up.

I feel as though this series has lost it's way a bit. It kind of feels as though after around volumes 5, Tsugumi didn't really know how to end it, and so the story has just continued by the ownership of the Deathnote passing from one person to another, and loads of random characters being added in to assist it. These two volumes were very info-dumpy, and at times were just page after page after page of Light and Near conspiring over whether the other person can or can't be Kira. It just felt like nothing was really happening, and everyone was just sitting around thinking out loud, which got quite tedious after a while. It just hasn't really been the same since L was no longer a part of the story.

However, there were still some good scenes, I loved how Ryuk got some more attention in this one, and I thought the first half of volume 10 was a lot more action-packed and fun, so it wasn't a super dull read. I still enjoyed it, but I just don't feel as enthusiastic about it anymore like I did at first. Still, I look forward to seeing how it wraps up in the final two volumes!

3.5/5 stars. The first half was worth 4/5, the second 3/5.

This volume started off exciting, but the leaps in logic are starting to get to me. There are very long stretches with characters doing little more than explaining their deductions. This means there is a ton of text for a manga. Death Note was never a particularly snappy manga, but it's become downright plodding at this point. This is my least favorite volume so far.

With good Sherlock gone, the series has lots its brilliantly antagonistic focus. It was a nervy move, though - how can anyone now oppose bad Sherlock? Even a new good Sherlock has to play catch-up, though he has some help from amoral Sherlock. This new tripartite arrangement can't replicate the intimacy of the original mind-games, so it's just as well we're left with one more volume to wrap things up. Surely Kira is headed for a downfall and the only question is how it comes about?

*3.5*

My least favourite one so far, but obviously it was still pretty good.
