This book wasn’t so bad, I did love how she writes about a fading period and how each character is just there in your head, what I mean by that is she describes her characters so vividly that you can just see them clear In your mind. I did have issues getting into the characters and sympathising with them, I also found it hard knowing who was talking to who. But on the whole it’s pretty good.
*4.5 stars. This book felt like it was written for someone with my exact taste- a WW2, British, big ol’ family saga and it did not disappoint! There was seemingly no plot to this story but at the same time, you get to know all the characters so well and the pending doom of the war just keeps relentlessly creeping in. And the writing was so engaging, I just loved almost everything about this book! I didn’t love some of the characters’ choices… that’s what the half star dock is for. But other than that, highly highly recommended! Can’t wait to continue!

Mixed review as I see this as the basis for a good series and have been recommended that it is very good later on.
Pros
I liked Rachel the Aunt who is the main brains behind the family and is by the far the wittiest. She is an a gay relationship but like that this isn’t the main fracture of her story.
There was also an equate amount of scandal which is worth a book of this size.
Cons
The plot was good however, this was deviated by random monologues on random characters who did not contribute much. I understand there was a need to have a slight downton abbey theme but don’t think that she made the servants characters interesting on a way that they could be.
I also think that some of the children’s characters such as Louise and Clary needed development as they seemed too similar in personality.
