this was a fun and silly audiobook read. the audiobook is really well read, and also has fun added sound effects that are utilised to the benefit of the storytelling, not the detriment.
it follows padme in her transition from queen of naboo to senator in coruscant, and the handmaidens that she works with in both these political positions. i admit, i have some qualms about the actual practicalities of leadership in naboo (an elected monarchy...with a two year term?) but star wars is a brand that i am happy to suspend disbelief for.
i enjoyed this. it's not the best written, and to be honest it doesn't add much to canon other than depth of character for padme (and the handmaidens) but i'm not objecting to that! i won't be in any rush to read the rest of the series, but i also wouldn't be against it.
i do struggle with stories that feature padme in this way, because the end of her story is just so devastating and well-established. this all builds to a very young, pregnant woman being brutally murdered by her husband and i find that hard to forget, so it always weighs on my reading experience with any star wars prequel-era content.

I am neither a lover nor a hater of the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. I saw each of the three movies in theaters as they were released and I even own a copy of each on DVD. However, I don’t really watch them regularly and I’m not very familiar with related content, such as The Clone Wars animated series. I don’t identify with them as I do the Original Trilogy or, for that matter, the Sequel Trilogy or the Star Wars Story films. They’re just kinda, well, there.

It’s unfortunate such a talented author was given such a great character with so much potential and wrote such a boring story. This book mostly relies on familiar characters and places from Star Wars to keep you interested rather than a good story. I feel like there are so many interesting stories happening just outside this story, like Padmé’s relationship with Rush Clovis or the formation of the Separatist Alliance that we could have gotten but didn’t. Even the epilogue sets up an interesting story with Sabé, which I believe is sadly continued in comic books rather than this book series. I would say though one positive thing this book did was feel like you were at least in a filler episode of The Clone Wars television series in tone.
Moderate: Slavery
It was a good book and I really enjoyed it but it definitely isn't for everyone.
For starters I think it's better to read Queen's Peril first and only then take this book. I think I was able to appreciate the story more because I knew more about Padmé and her previous role and thanks to that I saw how many things she had to change in order to push through.
The plot focuses on personal relationships and politics and how they shape a person. There is barely any action that involves blasters etc. but a lot of the political intricacies and how to deal with them. Padmé is undergoing a change and there is a parallel plot with Sabé, which shows how different both girls are.
The way the politics were handled in this book was perfect. Padmé was dismissed because she was young and because of the way she looked. She was constantly on the covers of NewsNet and even with great bills couldn't push anything through until she found allies and a way to make the senate bend her way. The political scene clearly showed the cracks that were present in the Republic long before Palpatine had exploited them.
It was a very pleasant read, the book had strong female characters and I liked to see how Padmé reinvented herself along with Sabé.
It's a shame though that we got to see so little Sabé, I really hope we will get another story with her especially after that epilogue.
