I always worry a little re-reading books I loved when I was younger but this was just as fantastic as I remember it being.

Quite possibly one of the best books I've ever read. The writing is so wonderful and draws you in from the moment you pick up the book. The imagery is so vivid and made me very emotional at times in the best way possible.

A beautifully constructed book. It tells the rail of a boy separated from his only surviving family during World War II and how he finds a life for himself in Australia. He suffers many hardships and losses, has wonderful experiences and travels the country always longing to sail back to England and find his sister, Kitty.
It also tells the story of his daughter, Ally, and how she singlehandedly sails to England on a quest to find her dad's sister.
It is heavily focused on sailing, boats and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and the themes are threaded throughout. It was engaging, with strong and interesting narrative voices and it does not shy away from harsh truths.
Probably better appreciated by older children and teenagers (as well as adults), I think this book is fantastic.

My teacher in year 6 (5th grade for Americans) read some of this book to our class every day. I suppose I like this book for mainly sentimental reasons, but honestly, even if it didn't remind me of my favourite teacher, I'd still love it. All of Morpurgo's books are wonderfully researched, and I really feel like envy one has a lot to take away from this book, whether it's something intellectual or moral.
