Breaking Free: How I Escaped My Father-Warren Jeffs-Polygamy, and the FLDS Cult by Rachel Jeffs

This was a good audio book. It wasn’t written amazingly, but someone who grew up with very little educational and was retelling horrible things, I think she did great.
I end up angry after reading these because men who abuse under the guise of God just piss me right off.

I read a bad novel about cult, and it inspired to read a cult memoir. This one is much better than the novel I was reading, and I finished it in 3 days. It is so good that I will probably consume more true-crime-ish cult content.
There are many parts that is hard to stomach. I have to take a break in between reading.

TW: descriptions of child sexual abuse and sexual assault.
A compelling story. 3.5, rounded down.

OMFG! What a terrible terrible cult! I was infuriated the whole time! Rachel definitely had a lot more patience than I would have. But I suppose it is hard to walk away when you’ve been brainwashed from such a young age. Highly recommend!

Wow. How do you rate a book based on how much you liked it when the book is about something as horrible as what happened to Rachel Jeffs and her family?
The book is well written. She includes enough details about the bad to help you see just how awful things became, but also the good she experienced. She did a great job being respectful of her family while telling her story.
The reason for the four instead of five stars is just how hard some of these things were to read. It is so hard to imagine how someone could do these things.
I found myself angry with Warren Jeffs and his “revelations” and similarly angry with how the 2008 raid was handled. So many traumatized children and women. By the end, I was smiling for the hope that Rachel and a few of her siblings now have. Seeing the last two pictures shared brings tears to my eyes.
Fascinating, but hard read.

This wasn’t super well written, but that makes a lot of sense given the author’s situation. Luckily I was able to overlook that and really immerse myself into the story. I knew a lot about the FLDS, but reading a first hand perspective from Warren Jeffs’ daughter was interesting and more detailed than what I had already known.
