This was a fascinating novel. I think it has its flaws, but the length and the somewhat rambling plot felt critical to me for the overall journey. I plan to read much more of Murakami's works and I am excited to see how this compares. I think this one is very decisive, and I have a feeling most of his work will be that way.
There are things that many people will find off-putting in this novel, but I believe the ugliness of these characters lives is what makes this book so beautiful. But some of the scenes do come off as creepy and do match the manga culture to me at times.
I think this one will stick with me and my feelings for this book will evolve quite a bit over time.

(Nederlandse versie) Qutienvierentachtig is als een goedgevulde borrelplank die maar blijft geven. Zoals een lekkere plank het niet moet hebben van de hoeveelheid, maar de kwaliteit van de hapjes, zo heeft dit verhaal genoeg aan een paar hoofd- en zijkarakters. Alleen gaat deze hoogwaardige plank van ca. 1200 pagina’s gelukkig niet zo snel op. Een genot om te lezen.

Re-read.
Final part of my favourite book my Murakami. It’s not as strong as books 1 and 2. Adds a new main character storyline from books 1 and 2 which breaks the back and forth flow I liked from the first two books. Fuka Eri is no longer relevant character in this book and I miss her character.
Overall has to be read as part of the trilogy but the weakest 3rd unfortunately.

-The cult element just slips away and doesn’t really get explored further (which feels like a miss)
