Why did these people think that all you needed to start a rebellion was anger?

This was excellent and gave a lot of intrigue and understanding to Snow’s character. Further, it enriched Collins’ Panem and sharpened her points that American has callously forgotten since the original trilogy. Despite its excellence, I just never wanted to read this. I think part of it felt a little long in the tooth and Snow’s deep unlikeability just made this a difficult read.

Wow! Just wow! I reallly liked THG but I don't remember anything from the books and I haven't watched the movies in like 10 years. Therefore I got into this book basically blind, which I think allowed me to enjoy it better. I didn't get any reference and I kept wondering if I would recognise any last name, but no. I knew he becomes later President Snow and yet I found myself rooting for him a few times, and then thinking, "no this cannot be".
The inner monologue is horrible. How set he is in his ways, how he looks down on absolutely everyone, everythin is a mean to an end. Such an interesting study of the mind, the obsession with the past, status, control, etc.
The pacing... it is not a plot driven book, definitely. The beginning, at the arena was fine, then it got quite slow to almost boring and at the end too many things happened in like 3 chapters.
I liked it a lot, and I will be thinking about the end for a few days.

3.5

I enjoyed this for the extra context and background it gives to the original trilogy. It was interesting to see that even at this point the rebellion was beginning. The covey and Lucy Gray were fun to read about and I liked the dynamic they added to the book.

Considering it's Snows villain origin story through, I was expecting him to be more villainous. He definitely was not a good person and his inner monologue really showed how much appearances and control matters to him, but I don't think it's clear enough how he ends up where he does.

I'm glad I read this finally though after putting it off for years. it's also a lot better than the film!
