HEY ALEXA PLAY END OF THE WORLD BY R.E.M.!!!!!!

At first glance, you would mistake me for an adorable, cutesy, innocent bookworm with a fetish for confetti. WELP… I also have a fetish for the DARK AND TWISTED AND F’D UP AND GROTESQUE AND APOCALYPSE in my fiction! Much like they say “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” – don’t judge a bookworm’s reading taste by her outer appearance

The sequel the Chuck Wendig's near-prescient novel Wanderers continues the story of Ouray and its inhabitantsfive years after the setting of the first novel.
Many characters are the same, but this time we also get the perspective of the "president" Creel. Creel is (to be polite), a piece of excrement made flesh. This book gives you an insight into the man, his motivations, his rise to power, and what he does during the pandemic. Frankly, it makes me hate him more. The fact that he, like certain real-life politicians, play to those who hate intellectualism and diversity just reinforces that hate for me.
Anyway.... in this book, Wendig explores what has become of the United States in the aftermath of 99% of the world population dying. He does not pretend that all would be sunshine and roses. He also doesn't pretend that the horrible would thrive. Instead he presents, again, a very realistic world for his protagonists to move through.
The story itself is interesting, though I admit parts did lag for me overall it moved at the proper pacing for the story being told. Only the resolution seemed a bit hurried.
If you enjoyed the first novel of the series, you would enjoy this one... and I recommend that you read it right away when you finish the first novel.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book.

4.5⭐️ easily rounded up. It takes a while to get going and the prose won’t blow your mind, but the story is a banger and enhances the first installment. The multiple perspectives work so well here, better than they should, probably because each angle is suspenseful and carefully crafted. The sci-fi is understandable enough for me to follow along, complex enough to be interesting, and bold in its execution.

I enjoyed Wanderers, but I'm finding that as I try to get back into this world I'm just not that interested. There's too much stuff that's a little too real -- a super-powerful AI, right-wing politicians, fascist militia groups. Already kind of a lot has happened and it's unclear what the point of it all is. Yes I stopped pretty early since this is 800 pages, but it's 800 pages.

A great sequel to Wanderers! It was made even more intense by the footnotes and epigraphs from actual people who write about AI and technology and have scary, scary predictions.  Loved the complex characters in this book.

Chuck Wendig has earned his place as one of my all-time favorite authors. This was a book that I never wanted to end, yet I couldn’t put it down. At some point, I want to go back and read both of these again. All I can say is, wow. Well done.
