The Elegance of the Hedgehog is as much a collection of related essays as it is a narrative. It is witty, heart warming, and painful, but above all, it is full of hope. Muriel Barbery created a masterpiece.

I'll keep this brief because I don't want anyone to mistake this for an attempt to change minds already made. I will say simply this: I am very glad I didn't read these unhappy, judgmental reviews before I read the book. They might have persuaded me that this book was about something else -- that it had a different message than I heard and it failed miserably at conveying that message.
All I can say is how this book spoke to me. For me, it wasn't about how special these characters were amidst socially repressive obscurity. For me, these characters were chosen because they were ordinary. The book takes people from different aspects of life and it shows us how that intelligence isn't about the books you read -- Paloma read manga and had no familiarity with Tolstoy or other philosopher texts. This book was about happiness. Finding happiness and beauty in a life of drudgery, repression, invisibility, meaninglessness. Some characters have everything and are not happy. Some characters have nothing and are not happy. Some have nothing and are happy. And etc.
For me, this book attempted to do nothing that I found pretentious or boring or stupid. All it did was remind me how important it is to find beauty and happiness in small things. A precious friendship. Moments of sunlight and brief phrases of music.
And ultimately, the message I received was one of hope. If you find there's no meaning in life, find it in whatever you find beautiful. The very small, insignificant relationships in Renee's life were what gave it meaning and in the end, left her with profound happiness.
So yes, the book gives us the message that beauty is in small things by focusing on small things. Some, maybe the Colombes of this world in particular, may find this boring. Maybe they are just not the right audience.
