I learned that Eggers is a prodigious talent, and he knows it, but despite the self-consciousness, this is still a very human and engaged book. I read it twice in a row and couldn't believe that it won me over so completely.

I enjoy Dave Eggers’s writing but often find I can’t understand the motivation of his characters. In this book I found the underlying motivation made more sense to me. It was grief, grief tinged with a kind of reckless folly. I found myself wanting them to make a grand gesture instead of pissing about so aimlessly. They seem to spend so much time and energy in plotting and awkwardly interacting with the world without achieving much at all. But ultimately I think that is what this book is about, the frustration and cognitive dissonance of grief.
This book sucked the life out of me. I had to try really hard to finish it, and mainly I did so by skipping lots of random paragraphs. The idea behind it is good, I just didn't like the actual plot, or the characters. I was very disapointed because I loved Eggers first book so much...
