It was okay. I read it because it was a quick read and I’m in a slump and couldn’t be bothered finding something else.

There were a lot of contradictions within the characters’ feelings and understandings and I found myself actually noticing them… and being annoyed… and sometimes confused by them because I would remember what was written before and it didn’t line up with what we happening then. I’m not a very analytical reader so I don’t normally pick up on inconsistencies or anything, but they were pretty obvious in this one.

For example, the main character can see other peoples’ magic and take it for herself, but at one point she was concerned that someone was being influenced by magic to do something they didn’t want to do and made a big deal about figuring out who was doing and it and how. Wouldn’t it have been easy enough to just… look? Seemed a bit silly to me but to each their own!

Anyway, wasn’t the best book ever but wasn’t bad.

As a kid I never really liked Red Riding Hood. I don't really know why. I think the tale was simply a little bit too scary. Mostly I didn't understand what the tale was actually about. Now I'm older and my perspective on the tale has changed completely. And now I love it. Especially in retellings. I was therefore really happy with this arc.

What I absolutely loved about this book is that it took all the elements of the original fairytale and used those elements to create an entirely new story. And despite this being a fairytale retelling it also had an original world, interesting politics and really gripping finale that I hadn't seen coming when I started reading.

I should have. I'm very familiar with Hamelin and its most famous fairytale. I knew that something connected to its tale was gonna happen. I just hadn't expected this! Of course I don't wanna give too much away, but I promise that once you've reached the beginning of the finale it will be completely impossible to put the book down.

I also really enjoyed the romance in this book. Mostly because I like it when I don't get a love at first sight romance. These two people really needed time to get to know each other. They really were a little afraid of each other at the beginning and they for sure didn't trust each other. But slowly, and it's hard to say who fell first, they started falling.

I can't wait to read more fairytale retellings by this author!

Perfection!

Scarlet and The Dark Woods is absolutely captivating.

How do I write this without giving anything away! Ah! When I tell you to run and get this book. I mean it.

The world building. The magic system. Incredible. The way this book is written is so believable.

The details and descriptions made me feel as if I was there experiencing it first hand. I was pulled from reality and dove head first into a beautiful but eerie story.

I loved all the characters. Especially Scarlett, so headstrong and never broke character but always questioned her morals and what was right as she had to face a whole new reality.

The relationship between her gran Agatha and her, I absolutely adored. My grandfather and I are very close and their relationship had reminded me of ours. I’d do anything for him. Toward the end of the book my heartstrings were pulled on and made me very emotional.

The twist in this book are incredible and I didn’t see it coming! I mean… I knew something was up! But it definitely wasn’t that.

The ending! The epilogue! Ugh! It’s amazing. I feel very satisfied and happy with the whole story, the plot and ending. The pacing of the story, absolute perfection. I never felt that there was a full moment. I never felt as if anything dragged or took to long or anything in the story being cut short.

Bravo

Do you love Fairy Tales retellings? Do you enjoy a story that’s as old as time thrown into the blender and an amazing new story comes out?

This is the one for you then! We have Red Riding Hood with a little Piped Piper thrown into the mix with a dystopian twist. A great story, will keep you guessing, until the very last page.

An epilogue that shows HEA are possible, no matter how long it takes to get there!

What a cute story! I was so excited to read this! I had just recently read my first of Ms. Mecham’s books and also love the theme of this series. When her grandmother is cast out at Hamelin’s annual Shunning, Scarlett has to brave the Darkwood Forest and its dangers to save her. She has to find Gran before all the previous shunned get to her. But Scarlett is too late, as her magic dwindles, she becomes lost. She is forced to accept help from Greyson, the shape shifting wolf, who she believes knows Gran’s location. But if she does save her grandmother, will she join Gran and live as an outcast or return to the elect, safe but alone. There is more than just the future at stake, her heart is too.

This was such a fun twist on the story! I loved the magic. It was so inventive! Scarlett was quite spunky! I loved how much she cared for her grandmother and her determination to save her no matter what the dangers. She definitely had a lot to learn and to consider what she really wanted for her future. Her gran was quite vibrant! Greyson was also a lot of fun. I loved how he teased Scarlett.

There were a lot of twists in the story! It did feel like the clues were there which was nice to read. I also enjoyed the cozy fall vibes! The story was easy to get into and the romance was also sweet! This is a cozy dystopian fantasy with only kissing! It is a stand-alone novella.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, a positive review was not required

I received a free copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review.

Scarlett and the Dark Woods is officially my favorite Red Riding Hood retelling!! It had none of that "I'm an alpha wolf and you're my mate" crap that I despise so much in other retellings
