With no prior knowledge to The Avengers or Black Widow other than the films, this was a great read and a nice look into Black Widow as a character. The art is beautiful and very different from mainstream American comic superhero titles. Not only was it gorgeous, but there were no compromising poses done by the artist (not even a classic boobs&butt pose), which is amazing, but also sad that that's so rare. I'm very excited for the next volume.

Enthusiastic on the art...sort of meh on the story.

I really wanted to love this; Natasha is probably my favorite superhero, and all of the advance buzz made this title sound like exactly my kind of a good time. Sadly, reality hasn't lived up to expectation. The dialogue is frequently banal, Natasha's monologues cliched and boring, and the story much less involving than it should be. There's a mystery developing that may go in interesting directions, but it hasn't gotten there yet. Edmondson earns points for getting some key aspects of Natasha's characterization right, though, including her ability to manipulate situations to her advantage; her tendency towards ruthlessness even--or perhaps especially--when she's the one who suffers most for it; and her habit of forming significant personal and professional relationships with other women.

And regardless of the story's deficiencies, Phil Noto's art is amazing. As preparation for writing this review, I "reread" the volume focusing solely on the art and ignoring the text, and just that experience was well worth the cover price.

my queen

Loved the artwork, and the writing of certain issues stood out as well. Pretty much perfect, in my opinion.

i <3 natashaaaaaaa

Good art, good story...really meh characterization. Someone tell me why there's no woman writer on this team? The angsty narration did not work for me. Natasha needs to be snarky. If there's angst and weakness, we need to see it and infer it, not hear it from her own voice. Especially the ends of each issue felt cheesy and forced. I'm sad because I feel like this could have been so good.

Absolutely loved the art style, but didn't care much for the story, or the characterization of widow.

Ugh. I need more. D:

The artwork for this collection of volumes is breathtaking and beautiful. I don't want to say Phil Noto is a magician because the amount of hard work that has gone into this collection is evident but oh my word the man knows how to pull off some magic. The tonality of the panels, the details, Natasha's red, red, hair it's all so well-polished.

The writing I found a touch clumsy at times but I enjoyed Natasha's character a lot. Maria Hill, Assistant Director for S.H.I.E.L.D makes an appearance and I really appreciated seeing so many female characters in this comic. I love Ramonoff's sassy quips about the rest of the Avengers, New York as a whole and her quite, more vulnerable meditations on what it means to be a hired killer.

As long as Phil Noto does the artwork, I will be a firm fan of the series. If you like Matt Fraction's Hawkeye: My Life as a Weapon, please check out this series too.

the art!! the story!! natasha herself!! all the reasons to read this book honestly 10/10
