'The Omen' was originally published in 1976, a mere two weeks before the release of the film starring Gregory Peck.

Well-known diplomat Jeremy Thorn and his wife Catherine have just become parents after years of trying for a child - their beautiful son Damien is a joy. But Jeremy hasn't been honest with his wife - he is hiding something enormous surrounding Damien's birth. Something not even he truly understands.

As the child grows up, it becomes apparent that something is very, very wrong with Damien. A spate of tragedies and violent incidents may not immediately be connected to the child, but as he grows, so too do the incidents...

This is so gross. Honestly. It's rank. The horror is real old-school, proper stomach churning stuff. If you've ever seen the film, this is essentially a novelisation of the screenplay, so you'll know what to expect, but I had forgotten a lot of it. There's a strong religious element too, but I don't think the religious folk come off too well in it 😅

I listened to the audio version on Scribd, where it was read by Holly Palance, who played the Nanny in the original film (not to be confused with Holly Valance, who did not). She did a wonderful job with it, although I did have her at 1.5x throughout.

I really enjoyed the author's note at the end of the book, where Seltzer described being asked to come up with a 'religious horror' after the success of The Exorcist (published in 1971).

Content warnings for everything you can think of, but if you've ever wanted to tackle this classic horror, I'd recommend the audio.

I’ve read book when I was young, It scared the heck out of me. It was a great read and I was afraid to sleep at night lol
