The collection of short stories by Virginia Woolf published as part of the Penguin Archive for their 90th anniversary didn't start well. These are very short stories and the first one has several characters spread over various locations so to go straight in was a bit full on. The second one is about a man who finds a piece of glass on the beach and then becomes obsessed with acquiring other found objects to the detriment of everything else. The style and language of the tale about Newnham College probably would have been better written as a poem. After this it got better. The Haunted House is just three pages long but very atmospheric. We meet the famous Mrs Dalloway in three stories that were written outside of her eponymous book. It finishes on The New Dress which is a sad tale of a woman with very little self esteem and a fear of what other people are saying about her. At just 126 pages spanning 13 stories read it in one evening.
