I couldn't finish this. Perry was just so annoying. She pushed Garrett away so often it seemed as if the interest was one-sided and she took forever to open up and trust him. It felt forced actually. This was my least favorite novel in this series.

Just when I think I can't get love a new couple and a new book any more, I am introduced to a new adventure that proves me wrong!

This is currently my favourite! Perry and Garrett are two of the funnest and perfect opposites-attract that I've read in ages. Their story and romance is one of my favourites from this year and I already wish to see more of their adventures.

As a tomboy, I immediately related to Perry. Her backstory is tragic and complex and I understood her motives. She is incredibly strong, bold, and daring. I couldn't get enough of her. Garrett is smart, flirty, and wickedly loyal. His own struggles and new feelings were amazing to witness and made for some truly touching moments between them. Not to mention for some serious drama between him and other characters!

The back and forth bantering and romance between Perry and Garrett helped push me to read more and more. It was sexy, fun, and always left me craving their next interaction. I loved how they worked to understand and discover each other. The action and villains were quite thrilling this time around, and I can't wait to see what McMaster plans next! Her writing style and world building continue to improve with each iteration. Not to be missed for fans of historical/steampunk/paranormal romance!

3.5 This latest installment in Bec McMaster's Victorian Steampunk series has a lot that appeals, and a lot that annoys.

The appealing: a friends-to-lovers romance storyline (although perhaps unrequited love-to-lovers on the part of the heroine would be a better description); escalating stakes in the larger world of the Blue Bloods/Humanists conflict; slow-burn sexual tension; a heroine with backstory trauma, rather than the typical hero; and a tomboy/private investigator heroine who gets to physically fight her nemesis herself at the book's climax.

The annoying: "Oh, she puts on a dress and NOW I realize this girl is sexy!" trope; secrets kept for too long for no reason (except for plot needs); gruesomeness based on mutilation of female bodies; "oh, I must hide, I must hide, I must hide... Oh, now that I've been discovered I must totally cave/self-sacrifice" rather than come up with any real plan to defeat my enemy; villain whose presence isn't felt until nearly the end of the book.

Another excellent book in the London Steampunk world. The world is so amazing. The characters and story line, phenomenal. This story didn't grab me quite as fast as the previous ones, but I loved it, all the same.

McMaster continues her wonderfully imagined and consistently inventive London Steampunk series with the friends-to-lovers story of newly minted leader of the Nighthawks, Garret Reed, and his former partner and current best friend turned surprise love interest (for Garret, not for anyone who has ever read a romance series) Perry, who he just realized is, in fact, a woman under her Nighthawk's uniform. Murderers, monsters, and the craving virus run rampant as Garret and Perry investigate a double murder that hits a little too close to home for Perry, while trying to navigate the sticky situation that is falling in love with your best friend, only complicated by the secrets they are both keeping from each other, for their own good of course.

So I skipped ahead and honestly I don’t feel like I missed anything. This felt very drawn out and predictable. Not my favorite entry. But the ending was great and leaves me wanting to read the next one.

The man with the biggest fists or the best skills in a knife fight isn't always the strongest or the bravest.

It's those who survive the worst life can throw at them and keep on fighting.

Garrett is a gosh darn dreamboat.
