A tale of a two brothers and their grief after the death of their father to cancer. Peter, an attorney, and Ivan, 10 years younger, a chess player both deal with their grief in various ways. Peter loves Sylvia and also a young college student, Naomi. Ivan is with a woman about 15.years older than him, and Peter doesn't approve. They grieve and their relationships are complicated.
I felt a lot of this was repetitive, I despise super long chapters, and I didn't need the multiple descriptive sex scenes. I did like the ending.

I'm not enjoying the characters, the plot or the writing style. I can appreciate Sally Rooney, but I think she's just not for me.
challenging dark emotional sad slow-paced

Although I do understand people’s gripes with the writing differences for the brother’s perspectives, I thoroughly enjoyed this. It felt so intentional, and raw. Rooney encompassed grief in such a unique and specific way. I found this so smart, and constantly found myself worried about the characters because they felt so real. I’m biased to a rooney book at this point right?

i wish i had connected emotionally to it more but i sort of blame it on reading it in an academic setting. it is FASCINATINGLY written, with an infinity of quotes from other works (i giggled at shakespeare and sontag quotes interspersed with peter’s depressed inner monologue) and the sibling dynamic is something i’m extremely into. grief is a tricky thing, you can almost forget it’s there until you can’t ignore it anymore.

4.5
