Quite sombre. Not sure how it left me feeling. Really enjoyed reading it though. Would have liked a few more things explored but I think Murakami probably didn’t on purpose? Kind of has an ambiguous ending though so watch out for that!

‘We survived. You and I. And those who survive have a duty. Our duty is to do our best to keep on living. Even if our lives are not perfect.’

no spoilers!!!
Colourless set my standards for books so much higher! i only recently got into reading and before reading it, i had read 2-3 books trying to get into reading but nothing really drew me in. i just thought was one of those people that couldn’t get into reading. But this changed everything. This book kept me on my toes. Every time i turned a page i didn’t want to stop because of how engaging it was. I’m a pretty slow reader so the fact i got through this book in 2 weeks says something.

Ok my first actual murakami book, I started Kafka on the shore and advidly disliked it (however I would like to reread it as I have matured a lot since then) I really enjoyed this
  • I really like how gripping this was despite when you think about nothing really happens
  • The character development is so subtle from how he starts eating well and no longer feeling scuicudal
  • I really wanted to know what was up with sara
  • I also probably really liked this book because I am a lot alike to the main dude
  • But what happens to Haida? And what was up with that homoerotic tension twords  the end of their friendship?????

I’d say that if you took all the misogyny/objectification/gratuitous  breast descriptions out of this book it’d be really good, but the reality is if you took them out there wouldn’t be enough material to call it a book. Honestly felt pretty violated just reading this and knowing so many people love it. What I learned from this book is that as a woman my worth depends firstly on my body and secondly on my ability to serve as a sounding board/problem fixer for an emotionally stunted man.

i love everything he writes im sorry i literally can’t help it !! the whole way i read it thinking it’s just so inherently Male (and misogynistic, because when is murakami not talking about breasts every other sentence) but there’s something so compelling about his writing style. it’s not my favourite murakami because it’s lacking that complexity which his other novels (ie the wind up bird chronicale) have but it’s still mystical and fulfilling and empty and dissatisfying all at once. he is always so
careful with his motifs and word choice (obviously credit to peter gabriel too because i really enjoyed this translation) it’s just fascinating. i very much recommend if you want a slightly easier introduction to murakami, but i still like his more overtly magical realist, twisted stuff more.
