A cowboy epic with heart, and even a surprising amount of empathy towards the natives & bison populations they're actively destroying.

I spent the entire summer reading Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. It was my first foray into Westerns and I wasn't sure I was going to like it, so I decided to read a chapter a day. And, then I fell in love with it, but I didn't want to rush through it, I wanted to visit it each day like an old friend. Captain Call and Gus McCrae have been working together as Texas Rangers for years. But, the Captain gets the idea to take a herd of cattle North to Montana to be some of the first to settle it. It's a dangerous endeavor and not everyone survives. It's survival and friendship and loyalty and love and grief and grit and wisdom and humor. I adored it and look forward to the rest of the tetralogy.

Likely one of the best books I’ll read all year. Each character, even the minor ones, were fleshed out and dynamic and all contributed to the story. While slow to start, as the plot develops and once the cattle drive begins it doesn’t lose any steam. The experiences of each character felt real and sorrowful, and each character arc covers an incredible span of growth.
