Finally read this western classic. I will read more of McMurtry. Set in Texas and Montana, points along the way. Loved the characters. McMurtry really paints a picture of a moment in time in the West, with white settlers encroaching on Indigenous peoples and lands, the slaughtering and loss of buffalo, changes in a landscape. Having read some history of the Comanche people and Texas Rangers, I appreciated the story even more. I really appreciated how McMurtry includes richly drawn women characters of the time and the challenges they faced in the 1800s on the “frontier.”

As much as everyone praises this book, it surprisingly exceeded every expectation I had. This book is so dern good and I can't imagine it will drop out of my favorites anytime soon.

Started out slowly, but with some perseverance, the story became captivating and then I didn't want to put it down. Not really my genre, but intriguing characters all interconnected.

I was told this book was amazing, so maybe it was a set-up. I took a break after the first 250 pages but decided to see it through. I don't regret pushing through the remaining 700 pages but I was also glad to reach the end. I think Westerns just aren't my style but there were some great characters in this one.

This is one of those books that grew on me the more and more I read it.

McMurtry tells a great story with wonderful characters.

I truly disliked Gus, but by the middle of the book he became my favorite character. Call is still shrouded in mystery, but I really enjoyed his dedication to his comrades.

I look forward to delving into the rest of this series as I'm genuinely invested in the characters and stories I met here.

For others, be prepared for the long read. If you enjoy western tales I would say this should be on your list. There's a wonderful world here if you're willing to explore it.
