Good philosophical story about love and sex. What makes a life light and what mages a life heavy. Can lightness and heaviness be compatible. Young woman pursues a man that will take her out of her backwards small town.and he wants to have no real loyalty to anyone. She drops everything to be with him and he has to make a decision about womanizing in order to stay with her. Throughout the novel we hear her side of the story, his side and the mistress with a look at Sabina (the mistress) lover. All told with the background of the communist party taking over Prague. Well written with many philosophical tangents.
I don't even know where to begin. I did not enjoy reading this book. Several times I wished it was over. That doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't a good book. Sometimes I had no idea what the author was going on about and sometimes I was really bothered by his choices. Like Sabina being aroused by the thought of eliminating her bowels while Tomas watched. Was that really necessary? But other times while reading, I was struck by the absolute truth of his words. Particularly the chapter about humans' treatment of animals. And when he said, a few times in the novel, that we never know whether our choices are the correct ones because we only have one life and no chance for a do-over.
I think this book is better if you don;t think of it as a story with characters and a plot but more like an allegory; sort of The Alchemist, only much, much less up lifting.
My favorite character was karenin, the dog.

the exploration of love, freedom, and existence is deep, but the philosophical reflections do get repetitive at times. the characters are flawed but so well written—teresa felt the most relatable to me. it’s definitely a thought-provoking read that stays with you.
