Wanted to read it after reading The Coldest Winter Ever. This book is not as good as The Coldest Winter Ever

Conversational, and engaging but antiquated Gender ideology and homophobic rhetoric holds in plainly in the 90's.

Sister Souljah does an amazing job following the accounts of those in her direct circle for an opportunity to bring counter intuitive approach towards one’s own growth. I really enjoyed reading her main characters’ build up. Some of the topics - no all of the topics were reflective of the African American experience, those we want to and wouldn’t want to discuss.

Great read.

I feel like I dislike this book more than I should’ve because for one it was a bloody pain the arse to get my hands on it during COVID in time for my bookclub meeting, and because I had only heard Sister Souljah’s name in a front of praises for her work, none of which I had ever read.

My conclusion is that Sister Souljah (at least in 1994 when this book was published) was incredibly hypocritical, judgmental, self righteous, homophobic, oblivious, classist etc

It is incredibly difficult to look beyond all that in the book and address the real issues that she raises that are still relevant today. Mainly because while the issues she highlights are legitimate her responses to them, her advice about how to handle them and her lesson to take away from it all is so exceptionally flawed by her need to be exceptional and separate from the people she claims to care about so much.
I don’t think this is a necessary read

Realistic issues at hand. But I hated her and her morals (or lack thereof ), her hypocrisies, her judgement...Not a favorite.

A definite must read! Through Sister Souljah's personal stories she educates the reader on why our relationships between African men and women are so broken and conversations that need to be had in order to heal. I was so inspired by Sister Souljah's insight and will definitely be applying lessons learned in this read to my everyday life and relationships.

I read this book after I read the Coldest Winter Ever. I heard her speak at Wright State University. She is an awesome speaker, and I hope she comes out with something soon.
