Beautifully written with beautiful characters, but became very confusing at times. Someone not well versed in the culture of the time period (like myself) might find some parts a bit hard to follow. Also the amount of miscommunication among the characters just to create a longer story oftentimes set my teeth on edge.

But the characters were a saving grace to the story, as well as the wonderful descriptions of scenery that abound through the pages.

well, wasn't that fuckin adorable

the only unpredictable thing that happened in this was that at one point an eccentric nobleman's normally docile pet bear has a fireworks-induced flashback rampage. and it's treated with the utmost sympathy for the poor, terrified bear.

this book is so unbelievably gentle. like it's so??? sweet?

audiobook narrator's accents were a little all over the place but her general tone sounded like she was telling a secret joke the entire time which was pretty delightful

A charming, old fashioned romance. I read this whilst in Vienna and it added a nice nuances to recognise some of the scenes. I love Eva Ibbotson's ability to write dreamy description and whimsical characters that let you get swept up in the story.

This is the type of book I should have liked. It has everything in it that I love: a little bit of history, a love story, YA. It shouldn’t have bothered me as much as it did. But for some reason, I could not get into this book as much as I was planning on it. That may have been more my fault than the books. I’ll fess up to it. I was expecting more from the love story. I was expecting more from this author, who gets fairly good reviews on goodreads, and it was just a huge letdown. Tessa and Guy were lovely people, I just didn’t care about their love story by the end of the book. Instead of wanting to stay up til two am reading to find out if they would end up together, I was wanting a chapter to end just so I could go to sleep. Something I consider to be a bad sign.

I didn't actually read the whole thing, because I got so completely bored three chapters in. She's probably a great writer, but I couldn't get past all the in depth description of back story and stuff. Not my kind of book, I guess.
