I really did enjoy this book. I had some trouble getting into it at the beginning and ended up switching to audiobook about 30% through. The audiobook helped me get into it.

I almost gave it up, but I read the ending on Wikipedia and decided to finish it. Not a bad book, but definitely not my favorite.

I picked up a recommendation for this book on one of my book review blogs, and it sounded fun and was on sale so I went ahead and read it. I enjoyed it quite a bit, and found it a refreshing change from many of the YA story tropes that I've become familiar with in recent years.

The story setting is the modern day, albeit one where there are Fae of various types about (Summer, Winter, Dark, and Noble are mentioned) existing in both their own world and our own and often causing trouble here. Our main character, an older teenage girl named Aislinn, can see fairies (as do her mother and grandmother before her), and she spends most of her energy pretending they don't exist so as to not attract their attention. Eventually, however, she catches the eye of the Summer King who hopes she will be the one to be strong enough to become the Summer Queen and break the hold of the Winter Court over the Fae and human worlds.

I found the mythology interesting and a bit of a twist on the Summer/Winter dichotomy that has been used in many stories, especially with how the Winter Queen killed her own husband (the Summer King) and locked their son up in rules and prophecies to continue her own power. The consequences for a woman who tries and fails to become the Summer Queen were harsh but clear, and added interest. I particularly liked Aislinn's strength in the story, especially with regards to how she stood up to her grandmother, was shy but finally accepted Owen's advances, and how she decided to take Keenan's advances and offer to become his Summer Queen on her own terms.

Overall this was a nice little book, one with a different twist on the YA genre, and one with a female lead who for once didn't give in to the prettiest boy in the room. I'm not sure it's enough to hold my interest for the sequels, but I'd happily recommend it to those in the right age range as well as adults who also like well-done YA fiction.

it was magnificent. slow at the beginning, but get past 50 pages and you will be hooked. very creative and magical

Aislinn is a girl with an unusual talent, she can see all the faeries walking around in her world. To keep herself unknown to the faeries she has to pretend she can't see them and this is at times difficult and frightening. She must follow the three rules! Enter Keenan, the Summer King who thinks that Aislinn could be his Summer Queen and makes every effort to court her. The only problem is that Aislinn has her eyes on a mere mortal.

So this is the basis of the story, it contained enough suspense to keep the pages turning and created enough interest that I want to read the next book in the series. It is a very quick and easy read that I ended up thoroughly enjoying.

2.5 starts. This wasn't bad and I didn't dislike it...it just wasn't good either.

Rule # 3 - Don’t stare at invisible fairies. But the two f9ollowing her are so pretty to look at. Aiislin has always seen fairies, ever since she can remember. It runs in the family. She was taught how to hide that fact from them if she just follows the rules. She’s always wary of getting caught if she were to let on that she could see any of the awful things they did. How come two of them are following her now? If she runs like she wants, they will know her secret. Why is Keenan so intent on upsetting her life? What kind of game have they involved her in? Will she be able to save herself and her friends from their attentions?
