This is one is a 3.5 not a 3.
I liked it but just shy of loved it. It was like if Spinning Silver and The Wicked King had a baby.
Very solid fairy tale elements and writing plus not veering in to the gratuitous while still maintaining tension push this one to almost a 4 star.
Feeling a bit long to read and short on action keeps it in the 3s.
I will read more in the series.

Haven't read many books about the fey/fairies and what I do know is more along the lines of tinkerbell/

Aislinn is trying to be a normal teenager, go to school, have a crush and make her Grams proud. only problem is she sees fairies, Her Grams does do. So she gave her a set of rules, and worked with her so mere mortals wouldn't suspect a thing. Things are great until, the Summer King decides she is the one to be the Summer queen. Only problem is she wants nothing to do with him or his world.

To further complicate things, she is falling in love with a mortal and trying very hard to pretend none of this fairy business is about her. Well she learns how much she is in the middle of the battle between summer and winter. So she has choices to make and she won't go quietly. She tells the King the conditions in which must happen in order for her help.

My issue with this book, I needed some more background on how this battle between summer and winter came about, and the ending answer a few questions, but it was also a set up for book 2

this is a re-read for me and I still absolutely adore this book.

Reread number... I don't even know anymore, and I still love this book so much. One thing I'd forgotten was how much I love Seth for the consent king he is.

3.5 stars but I'm rounding up.

I've read a lot of books about magic, witches, vampires, and so on. But it had been a while since I read one about fairies. In fact, I can't remember if I ever have. I know (as with all mythical creatures) there are lots of interpretations of fairies. My favorite interpretation has always been the Flower Fairies, the fairies whose paintings can be easily found, each fairy representing a certain flower or plant.

In some ways, Wicked Lovely follows that particular tradition and adds it to the larger myth of fairies being simultaneously gorgeous, fun, appealing and scary, violent, and petty. A girl wth the gift of Sight (a common enough idea that is easy to understand) is caught unwillingly in the middle of quite the family feud between the Winter Queen, and her son, the Summer King. The Summer King must make this girl trust him in order to gain his full power and prevent all of Earth to be plagued by a new Ice Age.

My favorite part: the quotes at the beginning of each chapter from different books that have been written in the past about fairies. It makes me want to read those books. There was a feeling of dread or anxious anticipation through most of the book. There wasn't too much suprise in the ending; I felt like I knew where the story was going from the beginning, and I was only curious as to when we would actually be getting there.

Overall, I enjoyed the book, but to me, it lacked a certain mysticism that I have found in other books. (I'm particularly thinking of [b:The Hounds of the Morrigan|13843|The Hounds of the Morrigan|Pat O'Shea|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1328488803s/13843.jpg|859144].)

Dear. God. This was terrible. No character depth. No explanation of the magic or the faire world. Who tf are the High Court? It took me a solid 150 pages to even understand wtf the summer king was looking for in Aislin. And how tf do you even pronounce her name? I can not wait to read something else tomorrow. Don’t waste your time.

Read this so many times. Yes it's a little "trashy" in places, and I'm now significantly older than when I first read it. But I don't care, it's absorbing, the fae descriptions are vivid, and it's like a hug in a book. Yay for Melissa Marr :)
adventurous fast-paced

Super quick, whimsical read with interesting lore and a wholesome love story.

An easy read, and entertaining. Not as addictive as the Twilight series, but good nonetheless.
