I never thought I’d say it, but… “the movie was better than the book.” Usually I’m saying the reverse, but in this case the movie was infinately better. Granted, the movie was only loosely based on the book and the book suffered by comparison due to reading it after the movie. I kept hoping for it to get better, but twas truly blah.
So interesting and very British. She can write such an elegant sentence. The characters are pretty depressing, but so is the death of the human race.

I love a main character I can hate and I like that he wasn't given a redeeming arc, he didnt change who or how he was. Not often a selfish individual is seen as the MC but James does a good job of showing us the inner thoughts of selfish folk, for indeed there are many amongst us.
Interesting to relate the book to the movie ending which is profoundly different and can be understood as one version or interpretation of the novel and its "story".

Having already seen the movie, I still really enjoyed this book. There were enough differences that I appreciate the way the story was told in both. Honestly I think I liked the movie ending better, as the book was a little bit too "happily ever after" for an open ended conclusion. Aside from that, there was plenty of action to keep my attention and the story raises a lot of questions about who we are as a culture and what would happen if one day the human race was in danger of becoming extinct.
This is the rare occasion where the movie is better than the book.

I read this book because I heard about the movie adaptation. I started the book before actually seeing the movie, but then put it aside for a while. During that time, I happened to catch the movie. I have to say that the book was far better than the movie. The movie was really depressing, and while the book had its down points, overall it was much more hopeful for humanity than the film.
Almost 100% different from the movie. I loved the movie but I also liked the book quite a bit. The writing was good, the characters were interesting, and the philosophical questions it raised about our society were intriguing. The only thing I didn't like was that many of the relationships were unconvincing and seemed to get in the way rather than deepen the characters or move the story forward.
