challenging dark

I felt physically sick to my stomach while reading this numerous times. Had to finish it the same night I started it just to be able to sleep.

Scary shit. Feels weird even rating it knowing this happens to millions of girls all over the world.

“It’s easy to dismiss girls who work on the streets as deadbeats or drug addicts without ever thinking about why they're working as prostitutes. And the truth is that many of them have been trafficked and they work long, exhausting, miserable, soul-destroying hours for men who are cruel and violent. They're constantly afraid, not just because of what might be done to them if they don't do what they're told, but also because of the very real threats that are made against their families and the people they love.”

She is just recording what happened to her, not being a writer was a little frustrating as I was often wondering what was actually going on, it seemed to skim over the top.
What happened to her was more than horrific , it is a very real thing and needs to be brought to the fore

I appreciate how hard it must have been for her to write this book about what happened to her but it wasn't really for me or written in a way that captivated me. I hope she has moved on with her life and still working to make sure this doesn't happen to other girls

A harrowing and powerful read.

2.5/5

I read this as the first book chosen in the book group I just joined. I had never heard or seen anything about the book and when I saw the title I didn't think I would read it. But when I saw it at a local department store I thought I'd give it a go.
I got 100 pages into this book and I wasn't really a fan. But I pushed on and even though it's a sad thing what happened to Sophie I found it more interesting and learnt alot, because I didn't and still don't know a lot about trafficking.
It must of been hard for Sophie to tell her story but you can see she is trying to get on with her life and even helping others. That definitely takes courage and strength. My heart goes out to her, her family and anyone else that has had this awful experience in their life.

Sophie is mentally and verbally abused by her father as a child before her mother finally has enough and leaves him. However, the emotional scars from that leave a mark on her. She doesn't really ever commit to relationships, and tends to push them away in order to protect herself. She meets this guy named Kas, and while she thwarts all of his advances for a long time, she eventually begins to talk to him via text and cell chats, and he becomes her best friend for four years.

After a devastating breakup with the one man she really loved, and a surgery that ultimately torn them apart, Kas invites her to go on vacation with him. The catch, she discovers once she is already there, is that he is not going to let her leave. Instead, he forces her into prostitution in an unknown country (Italy) to pay off debts he has for a drug-deal-gone-wrong.

This is one of those stories that just makes you so sad and so furious. Sometimes you just want to reach through and ask her "What the hell are you thinking?!?!". However, she does a good job of describing just how brainwashed a man like Kas can make someone, and how quickly it can happen. She points out things that she now realizes were warning signs, etc...

The book follows her ordeal, what she went through, how she escaped, and what happened afterwards. Sometimes I would remember that this was a true story, and it would make my stomach knot and I'd have to put it down for a moment, just to get past the fury at men (and women) who behave this way toward others.

Can we just talk about how fucked up all of the Goodreads reviews for this book are?? This girl was literally forced into prostitution and reviewers are saying she wasn't actually a victim and calling her stupid. You guys are fucking disgusting.
I get that it's easy to say that you would do everything perfectly in a terrible situation that you have never actually faced, and maybe it's hard to understand the effects of physical and emotional abuse, rape, and sex trafficking when, again, you have never been in that situation, but seriously, fuck you. The victim-blaming is ridiculous and unfounded.
